tiger Robotics: Hackettstown High school's robotics team

by Christopher Betances

One of the many clubs Hackettstown Highschool offers is the Robotics Club. In Robotics, hosted by FIRST Robotics, students must design and construct a robot in order to compete against local, national, and international teams. The robotics done in this club is significantly different from that done in any classes held at Hackettstown Highschool; one of the biggest distinctions between the club and the robotics classes is the scaling. In both robotics classes, students make relatively small robots, which could be transported easily by hand. In the club, the robot constructed by the team is multiple times larger than the class robots and requires a car to transport it. Furthermore, due to the club robot’s size, not all club members can work on the robot at once, so the robot’s construction is divided into three groups. These groups are building, electrical, and programming. The students on the build team focus on constructing the robot’s main metal body and other mechanisms. On the electrical team, the students focus on all of the electrical components and wiring of the robot. The programming team focuses on the coding of the robot so it can perform the actions it needs to without a human controlling it.

Currently, Tiger Robotics is in its pre-season and is only going to be meeting approximately twice a month, until the season starts in January 2022. As of the beginning of the school year, Tiger Robotics has only met twice, with the last meeting occurring on October 15, 2021. In the last meeting, old and new members were split into two groups. One group took apart the robot from two years ago to make it into a functional chassis, or a metal frame with wheels. The other group worked on replacing the wheels of a different chassis. Regardless, new members began to develop crucial robotics skills and experienced what it means to be part of the Tiger Robotics family in both groups. Overall, the meeting was engaging and enjoyable for all who were there. For more information on Tiger Robotics, robotics in general, or if you are interested in joining, please contact Mr. Russell, Mr. Filus, or any current member. It is never too late to join!
