You hear it all the time in the news, touted by influential leaders such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and President Joe Biden: “It’s time to get vaccinated!” However, if you are amongst the majority of Americans who have yet to receive a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, you may be wondering how to even go about obtaining the injection. An essential first step is identifying the three types of vaccines verified by the Centers for Disease Control and have been considered safe for administering. Amongst these are the dual-dose BioNTech, Fosun Pharma, Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines, the dual-dose Moderna, NIAID COVID-19 vaccines, and the single-dose Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies COVID-19 vaccine. The latter, which is newer and requires only one vaccine appointment to provide immunity, may be a groundbreaking step in quickly and efficiently administering vaccinations en masse.
Each state has its own policies on when an individual can receive a COVID-19 vaccine. However, the type of vaccine is entirely up to the individual and is dependent on availability at the vaccine center. Even so, should an individual choose to receive a dual-dose COVID-19 vaccine, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, they must receive consecutive doses of the same manufacturer.
New Jersey is currently in phase 1B; this means the following groups can receive and schedule an appointment for a vaccination:
Paid and unpaid healthcare workers
Residents and workers of long-term care and high-risk congregate care facilities
First responders, including sworn law enforcement and fire professionals
Individuals aged over 65
Individuals aged 16-64 that have certain medical conditions that increase the risk of severe illness from the virus
Pre-K to 12 educators and staff
Childcare workers in licensed and registered settings
Transportation workers
Additional public safety workers
Additional high-risk individuals

Unfortunately, when it comes time to receive your vaccination, vaccine shortages may hinder your ability to become vaccinated. In order to combat this, it is recommended that those interested in receiving a COVID-19 vaccination check with numerous local pharmacies or vaccination centers in their immediate area to increase their probability of receiving a vaccine.
