The Hackettstown M&M Thief

by Laura Gruener

Hackettstown, home of the M&M Mars factory since 1958, has recently been robbed of one of the town’s most beloved characters: the yellow M&M on Main Street.

The yellow figurine standing proudly outside of Tracy’s Candy Shoppe (a candy store on Main Street) was stolen on March 12th, and has triggered public uproar since. The man, his motive unknown, had been walking down Main Street around 1:00 am that Saturday, and was caught by local security camera footage. He seemingly picked up the M&M without hesitation before continuing the rest of his walk east down Main Street. The Hackettstown Police Department released the footage of the man stealing the M&M in an attempt to gain any public information about the identity of the man.

The man is shown wearing khaki pants, brown shoes, and a black jacket of some sort. The full video can be found here: Man Steals Giant M&M From NJ Store

The Hackettstown Police Department posted the case on their Instagram @hackettstownpd to encourage the public to send in information regarding the identity of the man. Some of the comments on the Instagram post featured local citizens of Hackettstown both shocked and angry, while others found humor in the incident. Some speculated that the man was intoxicated.

The local police department is still requesting any information regarding this case, as the suspect lives another day unidentified. People with any information are asked to contact the Hackettstown Police Department (908-852-3300).

The police hope to return the yellow M&M to its rightful home outside of Tracy’s Candy Shoppe on 210 Main Street soon. Hopefully, they will attach it to the ground this time.
