Marvel has been at the top of the film industry this year. The company has released eight projects of high praise: WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Black Widow, What If, Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Hawkeye. The next Marvel film is Spider-Man: No Way Home. It will be released on December 17, 2021. This movie is highly anticipated. When the teaser trailer was released on YouTube, it broke the record for most views in a day; the teaser secured approximately 356 million views within the first twenty-four hours. When ticket sales opened on Cyber Monday, the movie recorded the largest number of sales since Avengers: Endgame. The excitement for this film is caused by the long wait due to COVID-19. The third installment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies was hinted at in July of 2019, after the release of the second Spider-Man film. When the pandemic hit, the film industry suffered, and movies were postponed. There were no updates on the production of Spider-Man: No Way Home until the beginning of this year, so fans have had plenty of time to come up with theories. There are numerous theories about what will happen in the upcoming Spider-Man film, and the most popular ones are mentioned below.
Theory #1: Spider-Man: No Way Home is a movie about the multiverse being unstable. Ever since the multiverse was damaged, parallel universes have been coming into contact with one another. If parallel universes are mixing together, Marvel theorists believe that the old Spider-Man actors will reprise their roles and join Holland’s Spider-Man in the film; viewers think that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will make an appearance in the new movie. This idea does not seem unreasonable because other actors from the previous Spider-Man series are confirmed to be in Spider-Man: No Way Home. J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, Jamie Foxx as Electro, Thomas Church as Sandman, Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Rhys Ifans as the Lizard, and William Dafoe as Green Goblin are set to return. If the former actors who played villains are making a comeback, so should the past Spider-Men actors.
Theory #2: Peter Parker faces hardships throughout his life. Part of his character development is to learn how to cope with loss. Every Peter Parker loses a father figure. In Maguire’s Spider-Man series, his best friend, Harry Osborn, dies. To continue, in Garfield’s series, his love interest, Gwen Stacy, is killed. In Holland’s film, either Happy Hogan, Ned Leeds, or MJ will die to show a parallel to the other Spider-Man movies. The trailer for the movie has provided fans with clips that could potentially foreshadow a character’s death. Happy, Ned or MJ could die trying to help Peter during a fight as they are all ordinary human beings with no superpowers.
Theory #3: In the full trailer of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there is a scene with Ned and MJ looking terrified on some scaffolding. Either one of them could die during that scene. Peter could jump and rescue MJ as she is falling from the site. MJ could be safe, but while Peter is busy saving her, he does not have time to save Ned who could then fall off the scaffolding. On the other hand, MJ could fall to her death to create a parallel to Gwen Stacy’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The scaffolding scene itself has various theories. The most isolated theory is that when MJ falls from the scaffolding, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man will appear to save her. This could be a chance for Garfield’s Spider-Man to redeem himself for not being able to save his love interest in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Theory #4: In the comics, Spider-Man battles the Sinister Six, a six-member group of villains. The cast of Spider-Man: No Way Home has only revealed five villains. Theorists believe that Venom could be the sixth antagonist. They believe this because of the evidence provided in the end credit scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The end credit shows Tom Holland’s Spider-Man on a television screen. This scene connects Venom to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Venom would not be brought into the MCU for no apparent reason. Also, Venom is known as a prominent character that goes against Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire fought Venom in the third installment of his series. Venom was a part of the Spider-Man universe in the past, so it is no stretch that the symbiote could be in Peter Parker’s life once more.
The plot of Spider-Man: No Way Home has been uncertain for quite some time. Fans needed to pass their time by producing many creative theories. Every theory is backed up with some sort of evidence, but viewers will not know the actual storyline until they watch the movie.
