On March 22nd, 2021 Microsoft confirmed that the online multiplayer gaming service known as “Xbox Live” will be renamed to Xbox Network after eighteen years. Although they have renamed themselves, they do not have any plans in the future to cancel or discontinue Xbox Live.
Discord is a popular application used by millions for low-latency communication and voice chatting. Some of the most popular online games have set up their community on the platform, such as Minecraft, Fortnite, League of Legends, and Rocket League. These are just a few of the hundreds of games that have servers hosted on Discord that allow millions of players to communicate with each other. It has been said that Microsoft has shown interest in purchasing the company entirely for a whopping 10 billion dollar price tag. Due to the impact of quarantine and the pandemic, many people found interest in an online way of communication as the Discord user base skyrocketed as well, causing a spike in revenue.
There have been many other interests from some of the largest technological companies such as Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook, but they are currently under an antitrust investigation, leaving only Microsoft as a potential buyer. You can also link your Xbox account to your Discord account for others to see on your profile, showing pre-existing ties with Discord and Microsoft. Although neither of the official companies have confirmed this, Discord has been up for sale in the past but decided to become more independent in recent days according to The Verge.
Why would Microsoft even want Discord in the first place? There are plenty of reasons why Microsoft can pull another stunning purchase like they had done back in 2014 to acquire the popular game Minecraft. Microsoft can integrate an Xbox Live—now Xbox Network—and Discord combination to enhance Xbox Network. With Discord’s Low Latency communication, Microsoft can use Discord to provide a smooth communication and gaming experience for the player base. Microsoft can profit mainly from Discord as it is a terrific platform for gamers and regular day-to-day conversations. It only takes seconds to set up your server, invite people, and start chatting away at no expense
Has Microsoft or any representatives from the company said anything about the purchase yet? No, but if Microsoft or any major company were to buy it, that could lead to a huge change in the gaming community.
On March 20, 2021, China banned Tesla due to the In-Car Camera feature inside the car. According to Cnet, this was done in order to protect the secrets of the military and counter those who illegally access this data such as rival countries, Black-Hat Hackers, and those who are using the data with malicious intent. Tesla is an electric vehicle company based in Palo Alto, California, founded by entrepreneur Elon Musk. Although the company did not reply on the topic right away, Elon Musk has cleared things up in a development forum interview.
Losing out on China as a market is a big financial hit to the company as a whole. China is the leading country in Motor Vehicle production and with that market shut down and banned, Tesla misses out on plenty of sales and opportunities. Tesla, in the past, has increased production in China through developments such as the Gigafactory in Shanghai, China. The company has also faced scrutiny from other countries as well. They were even called by some of the Government Officials as they were very uneasy about this subject of matter.
Elon Musk had gone to a Chinese Developer Forum Video Call to clear up some clouds of the stewed officials. He was asked about the topic of trust and had stated, “Trust between the US and China is very important, that will lead to goodwill between the nations allowing the conditions for the best for both countries”. Musk was also asked about dealing with technology security and sensitivities with different governments around the world. Musk has responded, “Trust is key, governments are worried companies from other countries could act as spies. However, this is an unnecessary worry. It is not in the commercial interest of companies to spy; companies need strong values of confidentiality or they will be shut down, so for that reason, we attach great importance to the protection of privacy and confidentiality in commercial enterprises.”
Trust is key in this situation especially with handling private and confidential information that could be used for malicious purposes. For both sides [China and Tesla] to be able to achieve satisfaction from each other, they must be able to trust each other. Caught in the action of uncertainty and confusion, it was important for Musk to draw a clear line.
