Hello Thursday STEM families!
Today's career spotlight was on Civil Engineer Technicians! After learning more about the different types of jobs they perform, including (but not limited to) helping select building materials for constructing bridges, monitoring traffic flow at major intersections to see if improvements need to be made, and planning the construction of new buildings and the destruction of old ones...we learned more about the importance of structure and design when building to withstand Earthquakes! Students were tasked to create the tallest building (with consideration of what we learned today) out of Lego (fun fact: the plural of Lego is still Lego!) and check to see if their structure could withstand the Earthquake test with our hand-made shake table! There was some confusion at the end about which team built the tallest structure to withstand the test, but next week we will recognize two of our teams!
FOR NEXT WEEK, PLEASE BRING:
Masking or Painters' Tape
Engineering Notebook
Pencils/Pens
In a couple of weeks we will be doing our automata project. I want to make sure we have all the supplies we need ahead of time. Please bring your shoebox and 2 toilet paper rolls next week. For the shoebox, make sure it is no more than 12'' long and at least 4-1/2" high.
