How many marbles can a bridge hold? Well, our students tested their beam and suspension bridges that they made from straws and we were all surprised at the outcome! Today's career focus was on Civil Engineers and the work that they do with bridges! After learning about different types of bridges, the carefully structured design process, and the importance of this work, students grouped into teams of 3-4 to build and test the strength of their bridges....by suspending a cup and adding one marble at a time! Surprisingly, we almost ran out of marbles..and there were nearly 200! We ran out of time when it came to doing a full comparison between the structure of a beam bridge vs. a suspension bridge, but most were able to see that their suspension bridges would (should) have outdone their beam bridges!
