Hello Thursday STEM Families!
I missed your students over the last two weeks! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
Today we learned about a simple machine, the pulley, and why they're so helpful in everyday life! Students watched two short videos about what a pulley is, (a wheel with an axis), how they are used, and three main kinds of pulleys (fixed, compound, and movable), and talked about examples of pulleys! When students were asked for examples of how we use pulleys, some of the responses were, "an elevator!" " "window blinds!" and "to move my brother!" (insert laughing emoji here :))
Next, students were set up into three groups and given a bag of materials. Each bag had the same contents including: 2 bamboo straws, 2 skewers, 4 bendable straws, 3 wheels, several rubber bands, 2 styrofoam cubes, a cardboard base, a few paperclips, string, masking tape, pre-made landings made of craft sticks, and air-dry clay! They had 10-12 minutes to create and draw their own pulley design with the only limitation of using only what was in their materials bag! Once their pulleys were built, they were given glass stones to test the stability and functionality!
