There are theories in sorcery, much like practical and theoretical sciences of the world, that are used to explain phenomena but might not be completely supported by facts and reproducible experiments.
Coined by Redd Clysmian-Zentai of Harrowpoint in late 2025, Magic Welling is the theoretical phenomenon of stray magic leftover from spells dispersed into the atmosphere slowly collecting to points within the earth’s crust. Magic from dimensions obeys the laws of conservation, it seems, so of course stray and unsused magic doesn’t simply disappear into nothing.
Magic wells like water, but there doesn’t seem to be supporting evidence for why it collects in certain areas over others. Some consider that certain parts of the world are simply more vulnerable to magic welling; some say it’s a symptom of natural gravity; others say there is something that draws the magic specifically.
Regardless, Magic Welling is not a phenomenon that can be ignored simply because it remains out of sight for decades or even centuries. When magic wells (verb), it condenses, allowing the traits of each dimension to manifest.
Common and violent magic can cause quakes and eruptions; mind magic can cause headaches and disorientation; and flesh magic can cause unnatural growths.
Common magic is the most common magic to well, and usually does little by itself due to its impotent nature.
The most notable theoretical example of magic welling is underneath Harrowpoint.
The elemental "Vortex"
Due to certain factors, such as Magic Welling in an area, magic can be compressed to produce an "Elemental" - an entity made of pure magic. It is not known what circumstances must be fulfilled to produce an elemental outside of these conditions. The concept of an elemental is a very new phenomenon, only recently theorised late 2025.
Master Rohan, the current Head of Artifice, is currently studying the only known and surviving elemental, named "Vortex" that originated from Harrowpoint. It is an elemental composed of mainly mind magic, perhaps lending it its intelligence and capability to communicate, but also has traces of flesh and common magic. Vortex requires magic to sustain its form, and further studies must be done to understand how elementals can survive.
The Timeline Shift theory is a multiversal theory created to explain inconsistencies with people and events occurring before or after their usual 'time' in certain universes, such as an event happening decades or even a century after it is supposed to or is considered the norm for universes.
This phenomenon is extremely rare and has scarcely been recorded.
Between dimensions of magic and the rest of the universe is the Void Between. Not much is known about the Void Between beyond fragments of knowledge passed down from the past millennia.
The barrier is completely impervious to magic, and magic is typically inaccessible within its borders. Sorcerers cannot cast spells while they are in the Void Between.
The methods of accessing the Void Between in unknown.
Shadow describes the Void Between as an endless grey space with a sea of glass - a translucent platform that extends throughout the void to walk on. There’s no life to speak of, yet it seems just fine to breathe in.
