Despite only being the first iteration of the 990 and being over FOUR DECADES old, the 990v1 is still very comfortable in 2022! That is amazing!
The 990v1 utilizes the first version of ENCAP in its midsole. Back then, it wasn't ENCAP, but rather the "Motion Control Device" or MCD for short. The MCD utilizes a strong, polyurethane heel cradle with a soft EVA foam core to provide the wearer with an excellent combo of comfort and support. The first iteration of ENCAP still holds up well four decades later in terms of comfort; it has great stability and support while also providing a good amount of cushioning without being too soft or squishy. What sets it apart from its successors, however, is the relatively flat midsole and outsole shape. As a result of the flatter shape, it isn't as comfortable as its successors. But for a shoe that's over four decades old, I can definitely look past that!
