Episode 1 reward/immunity challenge

Bridging the Gap Physical Race

Survivor's 2nd season kicks off with the return of "Quest for Fire," which was also the first challenge in Borneo. I have to say, this version is a major improvement over the first season's simpler albeit more nostalgic design. There's a lot more to it this time, and everything about the challenge feels a lot more epic. I think it's a great way to open the season.

Episode 2 reward challenge

Butch Cassidy Physical Race

Perhaps the most dramatic challenge ever in design, anyone who's ever seen The Australian Outback is sure to remember this challenge, where everyone had to jump off a 35 foot cliff into the lake below. This is an amazing challenge for 3 reasons. First, just the idea of this challenge is incredible, I can't believe they actually did this. Second, much like how I talked about loving how Borneo's mud challenge took place in a natural mud volcano, I really love how this challenge involves an actual cliff. Third, the drama with Rodger just adds to an already great challenge.

Episode 2 immunity challenge

Tucker'd Out Miscelleneous Challenge

Just like in Borneo, the second Immunity Challenge of the season is a food eating competition— this is exciting. I like this version a lot better than Borneo's, because there are more foods to eat than just beetle larvae. This time, there is a wheel of food, and this adds an important degree of variety to the challenge. I do have one gripe with the wheel though, which is that it spoils all of the possible foods right out of the gate. It would be better if the items on the wheel were covered, but still, it's a very good challenge.

episode 3 reward challenge

Water Torture Endurance / Physical Race

Here we have the first ever tribal endurance challenge- these aren't going to be common, so I make sure to enjoy them every time. Water Torture is a brutal challenge, where each tribe selects a bearer upon which buckets of water will be loaded, and the game ends when one bearer can't last any longer. We will see variations of this a few more times, but I actually like this version the best, because weight isn't just added every 5 minutes automatically like it is in future iterations; the other tribe members actually have to transport the water buckets themselves, which adds an extra layer to the challenge.

episode 3 immunity challenge

Lock Step Physical Race

This challenge is pretty straightforward, each tribe is tied together and they have to race through a series of obstacles to the finish. It's not the most inventive thing in the world, but it provides some entertainment nevertheless.

episode 4 reward challenge

Mastermind Mental

This challenge is literally just a slide puzzle– a slightly large slide puzzle, but still, it's just a slide puzzle. And it's only 3 by 3... Good thing Christian didn't get to play this challenge!

Episode 4 immunity challenge

True or Falls Mental

Here is the return of the "Survivor Quiz Show," but this time, in tribal format. I don't think I like the tribal version as much, but it's still an enjoyable challenge as it relates to the season's location, and also, takes place in an awesome location, above a waterfall.

episode 5 reward challenge

Triage Physical Race

It's the return of the "Rescue Mission" challenge from Borneo! I still enjoy the quirkiness of this challenge, but I also feel like none of the iterations after the first one feel as novel. In The Australian Outback's version, there are now 2 people that need to be rescued, but I also feel like the lack of a proper jungle makes this version suffer a bit. Still great fun though.

Episode 5 immunity challenge

The Maze Physical Race

Here it is, the first big epic maze challenge of Survivor! This is going to become one of my all-time favorite Survivor challenges as it evolves in future seasons, but I wouldn't call the original Australia version spectacular. The maze itself is very generic and colorless, and I'm not super high on having this be a team challenge. It's still an impressive maze though, that Jeff explains took 2 weeks to build, but it's also going to get topped by every single maze that follows it.

episode 6 reward challenge

Blind Leading the Blind Physical Race

It's hard to believe there was a time where the blindfold challenge didn't exist, but up until here, it didn't! So what do I think the original rendition of this challenge which will quickly become one of the most used challenges on the show? Well, it's alright... There's nothing here that feels particularly exciting, but I do enjoy the variety this challenge adds to the show.

episode 7 immunitiy challenge

Perch Endurance

This is one of the best challenges, by design, that the show has ever had. I can even see the argument that this is the best challenge the show has ever had. We're only going to see this version of it 3 times, and all of its occurrences happen within the first 10 seasons, but it's incredible each time. It's like "Hands on a Hard Idol," but even more willpower based; you don't lose this challenge by accident— I don't know if there's any other challenge on Survivor you can say that about. Who is willing to stand up there the longest? How quickly are certain castaways to give into temptation? Another thing I love about this is that whoever gets voted out after this challenge is run has to own that they willingly stepped down- they weren't "so close to winning," they made an active decision to bow out because they were confident in their position in the game. Jeff Varner is this season's victim. Also, clocking in at over 10 hours (underreported in my opinion!), this is the 2nd longest endurance challenge to appear on Survivor.

episode 8 reward challenge

Return to Sender Skill

This challenge is wild. Do you realize how dangerous this was?!!! These people are throwing boomerangs that they don't know all too well how to use, and it's delightful. Keith almost follows Skupin right out of the game when a boomerang comes like, only a foot away from hitting him, and it wasn't even his turn!

episode 8 immunity challenge

Don't Fence Me In Mental

"Dots and Boxes" doesn't make for great television. It's also pretty unfair as an Immunity Challenge in my opinion.

episode 10 reward challenge

Double Play Physical Race

I mean, this is a fun challenge, but it also doesn't really bring much to the table. I guess this is like the 2nd "obstacle course" challenge to appear on Survivor after Borneo's military course. I don't really enjoy when they run the same obstacle course twice, which is also something they do in this challenge. Still enjoyable though!

episode 10 immunity challenge

Hanging in the Balance Miscellaneous Challenge

I have to say, this is a really fun one. I'm surprised it's only appeared this one time. Essentially, there are 2 stages. The first stage involves using a rope to make your opponent fall into the water, and the second stage involves rocking an unsteady beam to make your opponent fall (something we do actually revisit in San Juan del Sur). I found this to be a joy to watch.

episode 11 reward challenge

Survivor Auction Miscellaneous Challenge

I love the Survivor Auction. So much. When I think of my favorite seasons, "does it have an Auction?" is actually one of the checkboxes I ponder. There is just something so wholesome about the Auction, especially in these older seasons. I love how minimal some of the items are, like "4 tortilla chips and a bowl of salsa." Like, why bother?! It's hilarious! This Auction also gets bonus points for being the first.

episode 11 immunity challenge

Fire and Water Miscellaneous Challenge / Physical Race

Here's a relatively obscure challenge that I really enjoy. In Borneo, I talked about how I don't like challenges where all you have to do is make a fire without any sort of twist– this challenge is the exact kind of "twist" I'm looking for. You have to build a fire, but you also have to use a water bucket to shift weight on the seesaw so that the fire rises to ignite a fuse. There's also a hole in the water bucket so you have to keep moving. I think it's great, I wish they would bring it back for another go.

3/5

episode 12 reward challenge

End of the Line Physical Race

The challenge debuting in Borneo is back, and for the final time (although we will see carabiners again in Panama). I found the challenge to be just as enjoyable here as I did in Borneo.

3/5

episode 12 immunity challenge

Blue Plate Special Skill

I think this is a fantastic challenge. This is the first challenge we're going to see on Survivor that kind of encourages the "pecking order" to be revealed by the actions of players in the challenge. We are really going to see this explored Marquesas with the introduction of the "coconut-chop" style challenge, but what we get here is still great. Also, for weapons they use slingshots and "Australian macadamia nuts," get it? Because it's Survivor: The Australian Outback???

4/5

episode 13 reward challenge

Survivor.com Mental

This is a really weird challenge. It's kind of like the "Survivor Quiz Show" that we already got earlier this season, but this time, the castaways are typing questions off a script into a computer for their loved one's to answer... Wait, why? I don't know, I just feel like this is done poorly, which is understandable since this is the first "Loved Ones Challenge" we get on Survivor. When it comes to challenges involving both players and their loved ones, we are going to see this executed much better as early as the next season, Survivor: Africa. With that being said, I do think there is an element of charm to this challenge; maybe it's just that early 2000s computer nostalgia, but it's kind of hilarious to watch today, just this huge bulky computer and people TYPING IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE NETIQUETTE HADN'T REALLY BEEN ESTABLISHED YET.

2/5

episode 13 immunity challenge

Fugitives Mental / Physical Race

It's the return of one of my favorite challenges ever, and for the first time, it's being run at NIGHT. Wow, "Folklore" and night time challenges, two of my favorite things put together! And this challenge has evolved quite a bit since the Borneo version, where everyone was running around with cameras. Maybe this isn't as "fun" as that was, but I don't think there's any doubt that it's better how they do it here. This time, they get a story about how Australia's original settlers were prisoners, and for added effect, everyone's limbs are shackled; completely unnecessary, and I love it.

5/5

episode 14 reward challenge

Survivor Pentathlon Physical Race / Mental

This is an idea we are going to see a lot throughout the first 20 or so seasons, and I love this- an obstacle course that combines elements from a whole bunch of previous challenges. I don't know why this appeals to me so much, I think I just really appreciate seeing all the "throwbacks" they fit into it each time.

4/5

episode 14 immunity challenge

Memory Mental

Here's one of the simplest challenges we've ever had on Survivor— a matching game. I have nothing against "simple" challenges, but I also don't think this challenge makes for very good TV, especially in a season that already has a very slow-paced endgame. The biggest problem here is that it becomes difficult for the audience to play along as they begin to edit the challenge down more and more as it continues. Survivor: China is going to introduce a much better memory challenge, but this isn't the last time we will see this one.

1/5

episode 15 final immunity challenge

Fallen Comrades Mental

This is the only time we are going to get a "mental" challenge as the Final Immunity Challenge, and I think that's for the best. "Fallen Comrades" is a solid challenge, but it really doesn't feel climactic in the way that a Final Immunity Challenge should. I also feel like most of these questions in this version were too easy, which takes a lot of suspense out of the challenge.

2/5

Final Thoughts

I think that overall, Survivor: The Australian Outback is a season of average challenges. I will say, I do think that the season has lower lows, and more forgettable challenges than Borneo, but I also think it has higher highs. So many classic challenges originated here; "Blind Leading the Blind," "Survivor Auction," "Survivor Pentathlon," "Blue Plate Special," "Perch," and "The Maze" are all favorites that will go on to be used many more times throughout the show, and it really is admirable seeing them all begin in this one season.

Average Challenge Score: 3.125

Ranking Overall So Far:  2/2 (Worst so far!)
