Magic is everywhere in Thalassia's Edge- it shapes the nerokatas' world, their way of life, and more. While often unpredictable, those who choose to study and control magic report a deeper understanding of the Abyss, even finding it easier to navigate safely. Learning magic in Thalassia's Edge, therefore, is fairly common- even young fry can master a basic spell or two!
Complex Morphs (aka adults) can even help shape Thalassia's Edge itself when they have enough mastery of magic. More advanced spells allow users to permanently shape or destroy the very earth and seabed that one lives on, while easier spells can serve as cool party tricks or to pull a prank or two on your friends! All spells, however, can be the difference between life and death for a nerokata in a pinch.
Learning magic in Thalassia's Edge can be a bit complex, so we'll try to take this slow! Let's start with some questions basic you may have:
Is there any specific tells when a nerokata is performing magic?
Yes! When a nerokata is performing magic, all of their lined-off accent spots (such as the glowspots, ears, palms, fin tips, etc) will glow a specific color. That color is specified on each element, and the Wild Magic page.
What are the tiers of magic in Thalassia's Edge?
Magic in TE is separated into Basic, Intermediate, and Complex magic.
What are the elements?
For now, the elements consist of Water, Earth, Raw, Light, and Shadow.
When can my nerokata start learning magic?
Nerokata can learn magic as fry, BUT, they can only learn two (2) BASIC spells. Complex morphs can learn as many spells as they want!
What about Pan's Curse?
Nerokata afflicted with Pan's Curse function IDENTICAL to complex morphs!
What do the difficulties mean in the abilities pages?
Spell difficulties are entirely there for flavor! No magic is mechanically harder than the others, no matter what the pages themselves say. Flavor text on the ability pages are purely there for the fun of the lore!
Now, onto the more complex mechanics. In short, Thalassia's Edge does not have a linear method to learn magic. This means that a nerokata can learn spells in, more or less, whatever order they'd like! The way this works is as following:
To start, a nerokata needs to learn one Basic Earth and one Basic Water spell. This is necessary for them to learn ANY of the other, more complex elements.
Once they have these two spells, they can learn ANY Basic spells of ANY element.
A nerokata can learn the same amount of Intermediate spells as they have Basic spells mastered.
This means that if your nerokata knows 3 Basic spells, they can learn UP TO 3 Intermediate spells of ANY element, given that those 3 Basic spells include 1 Earth spell and 1 Water spell.
The same holds true for Intermediate into Complex spells.
So- if you want to learn one specific Complex Raw spell, your nerokata would only need to learn 1 Basic Earth, 1 Basic Water, and any 1 Intermediate spell first!
To learn a specific spell, you'll have to earn enough EXP in that specific spell. The breakdown of EXP is as follows:
Basic Spells: 10 EXP
Intermediate Spells: 20 EXP
Complex Spells: 30 EXP
These counts, of course, are per spell!
EXP counting is IDENTICAL to GS counting! This means that a complex shaded fullbody would be 8 EXP, a flat fullbody with a complex backround would be 12 EXP, and a "max effort" piece (complex shading + fullbody + complex background) would be 16 EXP! Writing, as well, is worth 1 EXP per 100 words. Please note that adding gifts, Personal NPCs, and/or Official Creatures does NOT give any extra EXP, even if the other nerokata know or are practicing magic too! You can though, of course, train multiple nerokata together!
EXP does not roll over into other spells, complexities, etc.

Magic will have a fairly sized role in Thalassia's Edge going forward! Learning magic can have the following mechanical, in-game benefits:
Super-Effective multipliers in Boss Fights
Access to some specific upgrades
Bonuses/advantages to Abyss Diving
Bonuses/advantages to various Events, Quests, etc.
Potential to pass down in breedings
And more to come!
Learning magic could also just be a fun challenge for those who wish to partake in it, and can help develop a nerokata's story, if you want to take it in that direction! There will never be events, prompts, quests, etc that REQUIRE your nerokata to have magic. Magic is meant to be a benefit for hard work, NOT something that completely bars members from certain aspects of the group!
Wild magic is a "bonus" magic type- one that is nearly impossible to control, and therefor cannot be trained like elemental magic. Any nerokata, complex morph or not, can dabble and use Wild magic- there's no barriers to this kind of magic!
