Case Amalia

Amalia

Amalia, 82 years old, a widow for the last year, is a housewife with primary education. She lives in an urban area. She has 6 children. She lives alone, although she is visited every day by one or more of her children. Her financial situation is comfortable, she receives two pensions of approx. 450.76 euros each. She has occasional family support in times of need. Her children live independently outside the maternal home, with remunerated work, although they maintain a strong family bond.

Previous situation:

Active and independent person with a significant family burden (she has always devoted herself to caring for her family: parents, husband, children and even grandchildren). Since the beginning of her husband's illness, Amalia has been slowly and progressively deteriorating physically and cognitively.

Diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia, mild arterial hypertension, generalised arthrosis, repeated urinary infections and frequent colds. She follows regular treatment with: Hypocholesterolemics, antihypertensives, anti-inflammatory analgesics, gastric protectors.

She currently follows a course of broad-spectrum antibiotics for 10 days a month for 3 months.

In the last few months she has fallen several times in the street due to her musculoskeletal problems with traumatisms, osteomuscular problems with minor trauma to her left hip, elbows and right knee. She has needed relative rest at home and anti-inflammatory analgesics for a period of 6-10 days. Due to this situation, her lifestyle has changed, being restricted to going to the doctor when she needs to and going out for small shopping trips when neither of her children can do so. Her personal hygiene has worsened. She has slightly neglected her appearance in hairstyle and dress. She only bathes when one of her children is at home for fear of falling in the bathtub. She has difficulties in doing household chores, especially she has difficulties with ironing and the general cleaning of the house: kitchen cupboards, tiles, bathrooms, windows...although she continues to do them on her own.
