Eliza Weitbrecht, Ph.D.

Eliza Weitbrecht received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati in 2017. She is currently a staff psychologist at the VA Palo Alto, where she previously completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Couple and Family Systems.

Her research interests broadly focus on the romantic and sexual activity of emerging adults, and in particular, links between casual sexual behavior and psychological well-being. For her thesis and dissertation projects, Eliza designed and carried out a two-wave prospective study that investigated several aspects of “hook ups” among college students, or casual sexual encounters between uncommitted partners not in a relationship. In her dissertation, she found longitudinal and bidirectional associations between hooking up and depressive and anxiety symptoms, self-esteem, and hazardous alcohol use. Eliza's clinical interests include couple therapy, impact of trauma and substance use on relationship functioning, sexual functioning and intimacy enhancement, and psychology supervision and training.
