Our garden is a large, unique space with edible and native plantings, along with an established orchard. It’s a working garden that produces fruit, vegetables and flowers throughout the year. Students use the space freely—to play, explore and connect with it in their own way. It’s not unusual to see students picking a cucumber, tasting what’s growing, or making mint tea at recess or lunch.
The garden and kitchen have been built and continue to grow through the work of staff, families and the wider community. Together, they give students the chance to grow, cook and share food.
Cooking
________
Cooking sessions take place at least twice a term in our purpose-built kitchen and dining space, led by our kitchen specialist, Chris Cooney. Students prepare age-appropriate, healthy meals and share them together with classmates, staff and volunteers.
Gardening
________
Students take part in weekly garden classes with our garden specialist, Hadley Cole. In our year round kitchen garden, they learn to plant, care for and harvest produce, while developing an understanding of seasonal cycles and the environment.
________
Our kitchen garden program connects strongly to our focus on sustainability and community. Students take part in practical, real-world experiences—working with our local Landcare group, composting, conserving water, and caring for our chickens and ducks. They also contribute to small projects such as collecting and selling worm wee and garden produce.
These experiences help students understand where food comes from, how to care for the environment, and how their actions make a difference.
