At Taradale Primary School, we know our students really well and meet them where they are at. We build strong Literacy and Numeracy skills through inclusive, evidence-informed approaches. We also know students learn best when they are interested and involved, so we connect learning to rich inquiry topics, with hands-on experiences that build knowledge and support curiosity, creativity and engagement.
Literacy
_________
At Taradale Primary School, we engage students through interest-based learning and place a strong emphasis on building knowledge.
Our literacy approach is grounded in rich inquiry units that combine hands-on learning with purposeful reading and writing. This helps students develop deep knowledge, strong vocabulary and real reasons to communicate their thinking.
Alongside this, we explicitly teach the foundations of literacy through a structured approach. We model clearly, practise regularly and build skills step by step so all students develop confidence as readers and writers.
In the early years, we use a systematic synthetic phonics approach through Little Learners Love Literacy to support the development of decoding, encoding and spelling.
Mathematics
_________
At Taradale Primary School, we focus on building strong foundations in mathematics while keeping students engaged and thinking.
We teach mathematics through a structured, explicit approach. Key concepts and skills are clearly modelled, practised and revisited so students develop confidence, accuracy and fluency.
Students are regularly involved in problem solving, applying their thinking to new situations and explaining their reasoning. We use hands-on materials and concrete resources to help students make sense of ideas and build understanding before moving to more abstract thinking.
We use consistent routines and clear explanations to support all learners, with regular opportunities to practise and build understanding over time.
Other curriculum areas
_________
Humanities and Science are taught through knowledge-rich inquiry units that connect learning across subjects in a meaningful way.
Students explore History, Geography, Science, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business through purposeful units that build knowledge over time. This learning is supported through hands-on experiences, as well as strong connections to Literacy and Mathematics—helping students read, write, think, and apply their understanding in real contexts.
We place a strong emphasis on learning by doing. Students might be investigating local environments, exploring how communities have changed over time, managing simple projects, or conducting scientific investigations—always with opportunities to talk, write, question, and think deeply.
Alongside knowledge, we prioritise the development of key capabilities. Creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving are explicitly taught and practised, with students encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and find solutions.
Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are woven throughout our units. We work closely with Nalderun and local Mount Alexander Local Learning and Employment Network schools to support students in building a strong understanding, respect, and connection to Country, culture, and community.
Excursions and incursions are an important part of this learning, helping bring units to life and deepen understanding through real-world experiences.
Through this approach, students build strong knowledge, develop essential skills, and grow as curious, capable learners who can think deeply about the world around them.
