The Weight of “What If”
The Weight of “What If”
by Li, Tiffany Shanshan L. (11A) | September 21, 2026
Doubt is the kind of thing that does not knock or ask for permission before entering your life. It just appears, quietly, and stays. At first, I tried to ignore it. I tell myself that I am overthinking, that I am overwhelmed, and that there is nothing to worry about. But somehow, doubt never actually completely leaves. It just sits there in the back of my mind, guarding every decision I make and feeding on every moment I hesitate.Poetry

I can’t seem to plaster on a smile as I was walking on stage. Today’s finally our graduation day, a joyous and unforgettable day for all, but I feel rather miserable and lonely. Is there something missing? Am I like this because I am leaving high school? Maybe, but I don’t think that’s it.

It was yet another rainy morning when we got to my new home in the city. I felt a sense of excitement and fear about what was to come. My fiancé and I had decided to move here to Manila since he was offered a job in a big company as an architect while I found work as a pediatrician in a hospital near here.

I watched with wide, excited, and anticipating eyesAs one by one, footsteps ringed across the aisle. Each footstep spoke of hard-fought victories,And when my turn came, I walked with a sense of success.

Masigla akong bumangon at bumaba mula sa kama nang may malaking ngiti sa aking mukha. Tumakbo ako palabas ng kwarto at sinalubong ang yakap ni inay.

The cacophony of voices filled the room as families reunited for the first time in years. On a lone table by the corner of the reformatory, Peter stared at them with his hands balled into fists, contempt seething just below his skin. However, the flow of his emotions was broken when someone tapped him on the shoulder. Annoyed, he swatted the hand away and then immediately regretted it when he saw that it was an officer. “I’m sorry sir, I didn’t-”

The snow was falling. The first thing I saw was the shimmering fairy lights hanging from the Neimans’ lawn right across the street. The first thing I felt was the warm mittens of Jasmine Fanning on my eyes. “Hey Mr. Robertson, long time no see, huh?” the five-year-old waved to me in a toothy chagrin.

The sounding of gongs, the beating of drums, and the clanging of cymbals were faintly heard in the distance. Yes, it was that time of the year, again: the celebration of Chinese New Year, and a little bit of love in the air, of course.
