DROWNING ON BROKEN DREAMS
by John Mathew Cabiltes (12A - ABM) | Published April 2022
A boy is drowning in a sea,
No, a river. No, a lake.
This isn't reality,
He must shake himself awake.
In the water, there are faces.
People he lost; friends long forgotten;
Failed dreams; broken promises;
All were enough to drown him.
Wishes made and pursuit forsaken,
Clear in the reflection of the deep blue.
In this sea, there is no bargain,
A kaleidoscope he can only hope to be true.
Still, he floats
On his back looking up at the sun.
The ball of radiance gloats
In his travelling misdirection.
Will he ever get to shore
By just aimlessly drifting with the tides?
Will he survive this unfortunate encounter,
Or will he sleep with the fishes?
Suddenly, gently, the boy moves.
He realizes the need to paddle himself,
Doesn't know where to; doesn't know what awaits.
As long as he is swimming, he's bound to be alright, right?
