Rabbit’s Foot

by Janelle Xu (12A - HUMSS)| Published February 2023

Some humans believe that certain things can bring you good luck, such as a four-leaf clover, a lucky penny, or even a horseshoe. One such thing is a rabbit’s foot.

Cartoon by Mary Angel Pugao

He grew up in a household that believed in superstitions; one of such superstitions is that a rabbit’s foot would bring someone luck. That’s why he carries the keychain of a rabbit’s foot that his grandmother gave him around his bag. Although he carries the trinket everywhere, he doesn’t quite believe in this superstition; if anything, he finds rabbits to be quite unlucky animals. All his memories associated with rabbits, and all the occasions on which he had brought the rabbit’s foot, have always been unlucky after all, like that one time when a rabbit bit him in a zoo during a field trip, or that one time a waitress spilled rabbit stew on his birthday, or even that one time where his neighbor's pet rabbit ruined his school project!

But despite all this, he couldn’t help but be fond of a certain rabbit-like classmate. They were very soft-spoken and kind to all those around them. His gaze couldn’t help but fall on them every time they met. But when did he start taking notice of such a modest person anyway? Maybe it was that time when they cared for him after a rabbit bit him during a field trip, or that one time they coincidentally brought a shirt as a gift during the birthday when a waitress spilled rabbit stew on him, or maybe even that one time when they stayed up late to help him with his ruined project.

Without this series of unfortunate events, would he have noticed such a timid person as them? Would he have noticed how kind they were to everyone around them or how gentle they were every time? Their every movement is swift yet elegant, much like a rabbit’s. Much like the unlucky rabbits that brought him to his knees, the soft-spoken person he admires daily.

Maybe rabbits aren't so unlucky after all.
