San Marcos Village was established in the early 70s. It is a Maya community but has now grown and filled with a diversity of people and families with different ethnic groups, cultures and Religions all living in peace and harmony. It has a population of about 900 residences from approximately 130 families. It is a peaceful community where people come together to work for the common good of all.
San Marcos RC School has been in existence since 1980. It is the second home to approximately 200 children from the ages of 3 to 14 years old. It is staffed with 9 teachers including a teaching principal. The school had been demolished by Hurricane Iris in 2001 where the entire school buildings were completely lost. Since then, the school has been slowly recovering and growing. San Marcos Roman Catholic School is an institution that provides an education for the development of students in all aspects such as spiritually, emotionally, socially, academically, physically and vocationally. The school welcomes children with different learning and cultural differences and will use appropriate strategies to impact knowledge, skills, values and attitudes.
Our intent is to create productive Christian Citizens in their community, country and global environment.
Children coming to school are spread around a mile radius around the school. About 95% of children walk to school bringing their lunches or sometimes forgoing lunch until they get home after classes. For those children bringing lunch, there is no space to sit down and enjoy their lunch since siblings take care of one another. The school is very interested in providing healthy snacks and meals. However, there is no space for a school kitchen since the school only has 7 classrooms for 9 class levels. The school has also been monitored for cases of malnutrition and stunt children by the Ministry of Health.
In an effort to help to get children into school and help to keep them there, through enhancing enrollment and reducing absenteeism; and once the children are in school, help contribute to their learning, through avoiding hunger and enhancing cognitive abilities, San Marcos RC is undergoing a project to build a building for a feeding program. This building will have an open area for picnic tables with benches and a kitchen. This facility will enable the school to organize a proper feeding program that will provide healthy snacks and fresh, hot lunches for all school children. Parents can feed their children and older children can take care and feed their siblings.
The building is a 60 ft by 25 ft. There are 4 phases to the project. The first phase as been completed Phase one: Building the columns and beams Phase Two: Building the roof Phase Three: Building the floor Phase Four: Building the wall and kitchen area.
