San Jose Village (~75 minute drive from Punta Gorda)
San Jose RC School has been in existence for the last half a century, the people of San Jose are mostly Mopan Maya with a population of over a thousand people and 199 student enrolled at the primary level with 10 staff and a pre-school.
To date, minimal cultural practice among few of the elderly due to influx of other religious belief. The community has a total of eight (8) spiritual groups. The members of the Catholic Church still hold on to the tradition of having annual Deer and Monkey Dances. The community strongly believes in the Alcalde system but the practice of Fahina is no longer, for people pay their annual fee of $10. This change happened due to many people jobbing out.
The village has several mini Maya sites and the largest cocoa growing community. Punta Gorda is the capital town of Toledo, therefore market buses leave San Jose at 4 AM in the morning and return at 2 PM in the afternoon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The secondary school bus runs daily from Monday to Friday to the nearest High School.
It must be noted that this community is located 30 miles from Punta Gorda and of that, 10 miles is rough terrain. A careful driver would take an estimated one hour fifteen minutes.
The school has a very strong Parents Teachers Association (PTA). They help the school in infrastructure and fundraising. Presently, the school work with a five years strategic plan to fully have arm chairs for all students by 2020. Forty of our arm chairs have been in existence for the last decade but need re-enforcement. However, if left in the same state it will eventually have to be discarded in the next four years. Urgently, it need sanding, varnishing and re-enforced to bring life to it and hopefully serve for another ten years. This will promote better seating, student comfortable and better learning atmosphere.
The school and the PTA will be responsible to buy rough and fine sand papers. The team is expected to help the PTA and the village leaders in sand the arm chairs and varnishing the arms chairs which is estimated to be completed in 2 to 3 days. The volunteer team will be responsible to get their transportation to and from the community.
The project should take 2 to 3 days with at least 10 volunteers. The village leaders and PTA will fully engage in assistance.
