San Jose RC School has been in existence for the last half a century, the people of San Jose are mostly Mopan Maya with a population of over a thousand people and 199 student enrolled at the primary level with 10 staff and a pre-school.
To date, minimal cultural practices among few of the elderly take place due to the influx of other religious beliefs. The community has a total of eight spiritual groups. The members of the Catholic Church still hold on to the tradition of having annual Dear and Monkey Dance. The community strongly believes in the Alcalde system but the practice of Fahina is no longer, for people pay their annual fee of $10. This change happened due to many people dropping out.
The village has several mini Maya sites and the largest cocoa growing community. Punta Gorda is the capital town of Toledo, therefore market buses leave San Jose at 4 AM in the morning and return at 2 PM in the afternoon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The secondary school bus runs daily from Monday to Friday to the nearest High School.
It must be noted that this community is located 30 miles from Punta Gorda and of that, 10 miles of rough terrain.
The school has a very strong partnership with the village leaders. Presently, the school works with a five-year strategic plan to fully have arm chairs for all students by 2020 and to renovate the roofing of five classrooms that was built by USAID in 1993. However, if left in the same state, the roofing will eventually be inhabitable. Urgently, it needs a complete replacement for when heavy rain and storm the water seep through the many holes that make the children uncomfortable in their learning environment. Once the entire project comes to a reality, it will promote better learning for all students.
It is estimated that the project will cost $12,276.00. The school and PTA are prepared to meet 20% of the project cost financially with in-kind contribution by member of the PTA, Village Council and alcalde. The school roofing will be covered by R. Pannel Zinc with a total of 78 pieces needed that are 16 and 20 feet in length. It is expected that the roofing will be renovated during weekends to avoid disruption of the school activities in sessions. The project once approved should not take more than 10 days to complete.
The project is expected to be completed by June 2020.
