Forest Home Village (~15 minute drive from Punta Gorda)
Little Flower R.C. School is located in the beautiful East Indian Village of Forest Home about four miles from Punta Gorda Town. About four hundred East Indians occupy this village beside other groups of Maya and Mestizo people. They preserve some of their artefacts in a museum for visitors to view. The nice aroma of cohune cabbage food is a main dish of the East Indians. Their traditional dance is practiced by the youths of the village.
Little Flower R.C. School has always done well with a School Library to meet the needs of the students. Recently, the roof had to be torn down because the building was infested with termites which could have caused serious health hazards for our students. The first phase of the project was to repair the roof of which we have gotten some assistance. We also re- placed new doors, treated the building against termites and created an open space inside by breaking the interior walls. Presently work is on- going to fix the arches in the interior of the building.
We see too many students struggling in Reading because they are not exposed to Reading. We want our students to continue to excel in the academics and so if students are exposed to a variety of genres from an early age, then they will be able to do well in their local and national exams. It is our hope to open the Library for the whole day so that many students will be able to occupy their break and lunch time wisely developing that love for Reading since the room will be very spacious.
Additionally, the school has an outdoor constructed bathroom with eight flush toilets for both males and females which means that all classes have to share. There is not enough time for the boys to use the bathroom at break and lunch time so if bathroom cubicles are installed then it would minimize time. More students will then be able to use access the use of it. The room is very spacious so that urinals can be installed which will not require a substantial amount of money. We anticipate that if there are urinals built for boys then the students will develop appropriate bathroom training for a healthy life style. On the other hand, it will allow proper disposal of human excretion.
The exterior of the building needs a power-wash before the painting. The volunteers will help to paint the interior and exterior of the building while continue to work on the arches in the interior part of the building. They will also nail mesh wire around the eves of the building which will serve as a case to prevent ratbats.
The parents will assist in providing snacks to the group.
Three urinals will be installed in three separate bathroom cubicles within the males’ bathroom. The school will provide the lumber, nails and other materials if required. Parents will assist in cooking and providing food to the group.
