The Star Eaters

A Legend of the Void

The so-called "Star Eaters" are a legendary tale of great interest to today's archaeologists, due to the pan-galactic nature and age of the myth. Whilst few extant species have detailed stories of the Star Eaters, numerous extinct civilizations make mention of the tale, suggesting that perhaps the Star Eaters were once real and are now also extinct. What follows, is the amalgam or "averaged" version of the legend from all accumulated records.

At the dawn of the universe, as the big bang proliferated massive amounts of energy, as gamma ray bursts flared and ignited, as stars were born, the Star Eaters came forth. These gargantuan creatures are described as bulbous forms with many eyes and vast arrays of tendrils, each individual being uniquely constructed, never two Star Eaters were the same. The creatures, are presumed to be living spaceships; having no need for atmosphere, suffering no harm from the many forms of radiation, and traveling the cosmos effortlessly. For millions, possibly billions of cycles, the Star Eaters simply existed, passing from system to system, surviving by simply absorbing the vast energies around them.

Then, the first terrestrial life was born, and the Star Eaters were confused by this development. They were an intelligent creature, but had little or no reason to conceive of building anything, and rarely communicated with each other, but having discovered other life, a debate soon began. Some, simply found planets with life, and scoured them, absorbing the organics below, and found that their life force was enhanced by doing so, others refused this course of action, arguing that the universe had not placed these new things as "gifts" and that they had some other purpose. Debate was all that occurred though, as the Star Eaters had no government and no ready means of controlling each other.

At some point a Star Eater encountered lifeforms that had reached space. This was shocking to them, they had not considered that any such puny forms could be intelligent, nor, did they think the universe would create intelligent life that could not travel through space unaided... what possible logic was there for this? The first ships the Star Eaters encountered were curiosities, usually left alone, but some, still persisted in scouring planets of life, even those carrying some of the tiny tool users.

Then, after uncounted eons, a domination that could never have been questioned... ended; for a Star Eater died for the first time. What is more, this death came at the hands of tiny tool users, who, as they were being consumed by the Star Eater, sent a swarm of their metal craft to assault it. The assault failed, but the planet was then detonated and the resulting explosion destroyed the great and timeless creature.

After this, the Star Eaters were enraged, and whenever they found life, they simply consumed the star they orbited (instead of risking engaging their planets) and thus any life would simply freeze to death. However, despite the great power of the Star Eaters, they were not coordinated and made no special effort to find terrestrial life, meanwhile, the civilizations they were destroying, organized, allied, and built. Soon, dozens of Star Eaters were being attacked by ever greater numbers of ships and more and more powerful weapons, which were eventually powerful enough to kill Star Eaters. As the balance of power turned, it becomes unclear what happened to the Star Eaters.

Most stories state, that over time, the Star Eaters were hunted to extinction, others, state that the Star Eaters simply moved on from the universe, back to the inky black nothingness from which they appeared. What is most intriguing about the legend is the fact that the stories always point out that the conflict described was clearly the result of misunderstandings, that the Star Eaters had not understood what they had been doing for thousands, possibly millions of cycles. That these stories exist throughout the galaxy is fascinating, but even the most fanciful of archaeologists is quick to point out, that there is no evidence that the Star Eaters ever existed. Still the possibility that once upon a time there were great civilizations banding together to destroy such leviathans is a tantalizing conjecture.
