On Mobius’ surface, by Never Lake, Tails, Johnny and Porker were looking all around in the hopes of finding Sonic and Amy, unsure of what had become of them since Sonic rushed off earlier. Despite Sonic having been on the Miracle Planet for hours now, less than a single hour had passed on Mobius’ surface due to the time dilation effect, still ample time for the trio to arrive via the bi-plane.
“I don’t understand,” Johnny said worriedly, “There’s nobody around, the place is deserted.”
Tails furrowed his brow. He looked skyward with concern filling his head. He was surprised to see a metal sphere belching flames from its surface, “What happened to the Miracle Planet?”
Porker followed Tails’ gaze and his jaw dropped, “Oh my goodness… I have no idea, Tails, but I have a nasty feeling Sonic and Amy might be finding out right now…”
The Miracle Planet began to fade from view, as if disappearing from existence. In reality, time was up- the Miracle Planet was warping away. The three friends instinctively made as if to rush towards the chain attached to the tiny world, only to catch themselves, realising it was futile.
Porker continued, “Since the Miracle Planet only appears above Mobius one day each month, it looks like we’re going to have to be patient…”

Up on the Miracle Planet, Mobius was currently the furthest place from Sonic’s mind as he found himself staring at an enemy who, five minutes ago, he’d thought destroyed.
“You…” Sonic snarled at his doppelganger, “How can you still be here? I watched you get blasted into tiny Metal Sonic chunks.”
“Information request granted,” Metal Sonic noted, “Time is in flux. My destruction was not yet fixed. I was constructed using technology of the future, sent back to the present. I am able to draw power from the machinery of this world. I cannot be destroyed as long as mighty Robotnik’s control over this planet remains absolute.”
“But it’s not absolute is it, you chrome-coated cretin?” Sonic snapped, “Look around you, do you see any factories here?”
The world around Sonic, Amy and Metal Sonic shimmered. Suddenly, the entire landscape was covered in hideous metal and machinery.
Sonic gulped, “I’ll let you off if you don’t want to answer that.”
“Sonic, what’s going on?” Amy asked, “Is this the future?”
“Maybe. It’s a possible future. I’d call it a bad future, one we want to avoid.”
Metal Sonic interrupted, “Impossible. Your termination is assured. I was created to destroy you, Sonic. It is my only purpose and I will never stop.”
Sonic gave a wry smile, “Not even if I say pretty please?”
“You cannot escape your fate.”
Sonic tutted, “Comedy’s wasted on you, I see.”
Surprising Amy, Sonic bolted off at top speed, sprinting away from Metal Sonic.
The pink hedgehog stood aghast in bewilderment, “Sonic?! I… I don’t believe it! Sonic ran away!”
Metal Sonic loomed over Amy, “He cannot run away from his fate. And now neither can you.”
Metal Sonic’s chest began to glow bright red as he charged up a laser attack. Amy became aware of a dust cloud kicking up behind Metal Sonic, drawing nearer at great speed. With a tremendous crack, Sonic ploughed into Metal Sonic’s back.
“Sonic?!” Amy squeaked, “But I thought you…?”
Sonic rolled his eyes, “Don’t know if you knew this, Amy, but planets are round.”
“You ran around the entire planet?!”
“Sure. Well, I mean, it is pretty small. Probably take me a touch longer to run around Mobius. A minute or two maybe.”
Metal Sonic drew to his feet and extended a hand. A crackle of electricity sparked towards him and refuelled his power cells immediately. The robot stared grimly at Sonic, “Robotnik is not without mercy. Surrender now and I will make your final moment a quick one with minimal suffering.”
Sonic ducked and dodged as his mechanical duplicate fired off laser bolts and sprayed electricity all around. In the confusion, the original hedgehog tripped over a sprawling length of cable snaking untidily from the ground.
Metal Sonic hung in the air above the real Sonic, his jet engine growling, “Probability of termination of Sonic the Hedgehog rising to ninety percent.”
Suddenly, something small, blue and round slammed into Metal Sonic’s body. The Badnik sparked and announced, “System error… commencing reboot…” before slamming into the ground.
Sonic got to his feet as Amy rushed to his side, “What on Mobius was that?”
“That, good buddy, was me!” Sonic’s eyes almost popped out of his head as he turned to see the owner of the voice- a miniature version of himself, “Or, rather, you in the future!”
“What?!” Sonic exclaimed.
The small Sonic pointed at a strange green beam shooting from a nearby building down to the ground, “Quickly, jump into this beam! No time to explain, pal!”
Sonic frowned, “Wait a minute… you’re saying that in the future, I turn Chibi?”
The little Sonic shoved Sonic into the green ray, “Get in the beam!”
Sonic let out a yelp but, sure enough, began to shrink to match the size of the other Sonic.
The little Sonic remarked, “Let’s see… what did I say when this happened in my past…? Oh yes!”
In unison, the two Sonics said, “Well this had better not be a trick!”
It was at this point that Sonic realised his supposed future self was holding a small, grey, oval-shaped rock. The future Sonic extended it to pass it to Sonic, “This is the Time Stone! Take it, you’ve got to travel into the past and stop all this ever happening!”
Sonic accepted the Time Stone and stared at it, greatly confused, “Before Metal Sonic recovers, right?”
“Reboot completed. Efficiency level one hundred percent!”
Metal Sonic was stood over the two hedgehogs, crackling with electricity.
“Actually,” the future Sonic admitted, “I wasn’t quite quick enough for that…”
Sonic looked at the Time Stone, then at his future self, then at Amy, then at Metal Sonic.
The future Sonic waved him off, “Run, just run! The Time Stone will take you into the past!”
Sonic set off at a run, “But what am I supposed to do?!”
“You’ll figure it out!” the future Sonic called back to him, leaping a blast of electrical energy shot from Metal Sonic, “I did!”
Sonic ran like his life depended on it, knowing all too well it very probably did, “Just run, he says… real helpful, future me…”
The Time Stone began to glow and a bright white sparkle shone around Sonic, “Hang on… maybe this is—”
Before Sonic could finish his thought, he found himself being propelled through a green void, rushing around him on all sides. With mouth agape in amazement, Sonic watched as he was transported back in time to the past. Looking in his palm, Sonic saw the Time Stone had disappeared.
All around Sonic, beautiful greenery bloomed, with flowers of all colours dotting the landscape. Trees, covered in leaves and bearing fruit completed the idyllic view. Sonic eyed a plume of smoke in the far distance. Unsure of what to do next, he decided the smoke was likely a safe bet and rushed towards it.
Sonic found a machine clanking and clattering, coughing noxious brown smoke into the air. The machine was being guarded by what appeared to be a flying saucer. Deciding this was one UFO he didn’t much like the look of, Sonic barrelled into it with a Spin Attack and it sputtered as it smashed to pieces.
The hedgehog dared to step closer to the machine, “This is some serious hardware. This must be what future-me wanted me to find.”
Kintobor responded, “Watch out, Sonic- those wires are like tendrils!”
Sure enough, wires and cable extended from the machine on all sides, pumping outwards and digging down into the ground, much to Sonic’s disgust, “Gross, it’s like it’s alive. Of course! In the future, this thing must have grown to cover the entire planet!”
Sonic spotted an opening on the side of the machine just the right size for a now-shrunken hedgehog hero to enter. Deciding not to wait for an invitation, he leapt inside. A brilliant, bright white light shone inside the machine and Sonic decided to follow the light to its source. To his amazement, he saw a small, grey, oval-shaped rock, suspended in a beam of light with various complex pieces of machinery pointing at it.
“The Time Stone!” Sonic exclaimed, “Alright, well… let’s see how well this machine works without its power source…”
Snatching the Time Stone, Sonic dove out of the machine and watched with a big grin on his face as it collapsed in a heap of junk. Sonic ran at speed away from the machine and the Time Stone glowed once more. A rushing green voice swept past Sonic and, before he knew it, he wasn’t too far from where he’d been when he departed.
“Alright, I’m back in the present!” Sonic remarked to Kintobor, “Hey, what’s that?” Sonic eyed Metal Sonic, hanging in the air above his past self, “Just in the nick of time!” The hedgehog spied a ramp and raced up it before curling himself into a ball aimed directly at the terrible foe.
Sonic slammed into Metal Sonic’s body. The Badnik sparked and announced, “System error… commencing reboot…” before slamming into the ground.
The Sonic of the past got to his feet as Amy rushed to his side, “What on Mobius was that?”
“That, good buddy, was me!” past Sonic’s eyes almost popped out of his head as he turned to see the owner of the voice- a miniature version of himself, “Or, rather, you in the future!”
“What?!” past Sonic exclaimed.
Sonic pointed at a strange green beam shooting from a nearby building down to the ground, “Quickly, jump into this beam! No time to explain, pal!”
Past Sonic frowned, “Wait a minute… you’re saying that in the future, I turn Chibi?”
Sonic shoved past Sonic into the green ray, “Get in the beam!”
Past Sonic let out a yelp but, sure enough, began to shrink to match the size of the other Sonic.
Sonic remarked, “Let’s see… what did I say when this happened in my past…? Oh yes!”
In unison, the two Sonics said, “Well this had better not be a trick!”
It was at this point that past Sonic realised his supposed future self was holding a small, grey, oval-shaped rock. Sonic extended it to pass it to past Sonic, “This is the Time Stone! Take it, you’ve got to travel into the past and stop all this ever happening!”
Past Sonic accepted the Time Stone and stared at it, greatly confused, “Before Metal Sonic recovers, right?”
“Reboot completed. Efficiency level one hundred percent!”
Metal Sonic was stood over the two hedgehogs, crackling with electricity.
“Actually,” Sonic admitted, “I wasn’t quite quick enough for that…”
Past Sonic looked at the Time Stone, then at his future self, then at Amy, then at Metal Sonic.
Sonic waved him off, “Run, just run! The Time Stone will take you into the past!”
Past Sonic set off at a run, “But what am I supposed to do?!”
“You’ll figure it out!” Sonic called back to him, leaping a blast of electrical energy shot from Metal Sonic, “I did!”
Sonic ran like his life depended on it, knowing all too well it very probably did, and out of sight and earshot.
“I don’t understand!” Sonic was confused and more than a little bit worried now, “I did everything right but nothing’s changed!”
Metal Sonic fired a bolt of energy at Sonic and flowers flew through the air.
“Hang on…” Sonic scrunched his forehead as he looked to make sure he was seeing right. Sure enough, the machinery was disappearing, phasing out of existence- because it had never would have possibly could have going to was existed after all before! (Time travel and tenses- great isn’t it?)
“It’s working!” Sonic exclaimed, “Time’s catching up and re-organising itself!” In a flash, Sonic began to grow to his usual size, “Of course! The shrink ray never existed, so I couldn’t be shrunk by it! And the ray never existed because the machine never grew to cover the whole planet!”
Sonic turned to look at Metal Sonic, a grim look on his face, “But, most importantly of all… you chum… were never built!”
Metal Sonic began to phase out of existence, a panicked expression somehow written on his robotic face, “Anomaly… error… chaos…” Then nothing. He was gone. Technically, he’d never been. Since the technology use to make him had never come to be created and beamed back into the past, Metal Sonic couldn’t exist.
“Sonic, you did it!” Amy rushed to him and put a celebratory arm around him, “You beat Metal Sonic… you saved the planet! Incredible!”
Sonic shrugged her arm off and shook his head, “Yeah, well, not all good news is it? I saved you too, didn’t I?”
The two exchanged a look. Sonic softened and they both smiled. They’d survived.
“I guess the race that called this planet home once can come back here some day now,” Sonic smiled. He looked skywards. His eye followed the chain that had tethered the Miracle Planet to Mobius. Half of it had disappeared. Or, rather, the half he was looking at had disappeared, having shifted dimensions away from Mobius. He and Amy were stranded.
“You know, Sonic,” Amy said with a cheeky smirk, “The Miracle Planet doesn’t appear over Mobius for a whole month. Just think- together, all alone up here, just you and me…”
Sonic sighed as he pondered the toll thirty days of Amy would have on his sanity, “Boy, I’m really going to miss Metal Sonic…”
