The cloaked figure trudged through the horrendous arctic temperatures, the snow soaking their garment and chilling their legs. It had been a long, lonely and dangerous road. But they knew it was the righteous path.
Their shivering hands clenched into a ball to knock on the door of the unassuming building. The door swung open before even the first knock. The figure stepped inside and the door shut behind them.
A kindly gentleman’s voice spoke out in the darkness, “Do please come in. Take a warm by the fire. You must be frozen, Your Highness”
The figure pulled back their hood to reveal the face of a purple-furred female adult hedgehog with long purple hair, “I see your powers of perception haven’t been dulled by this dreadful weather, great oracle”
In a burst of magic, another cloaked figure appeared, though rather than the pleasing teal of the hedgehog’s garment, this cloak was a black much more befitting a mystic. The Oracle of Delphius was an unusual hybrid creature. Half crocodile, half anteater, all-seeing, all-knowing.
The oracle bowed, “And I see recent events have done little to dull your natural grace, majesty”
“Your prophecy has begun to come to fruition, wise oracle. I wish it had not been so”
“As do I, majesty. But all prophecies of the oracle come to pass”
“If only we could see how to turn the tide”
“Alas,” the oracle bowed his head low, “that is beyond me. For while we can influence the outcome of events, that outcome remains uncertain. The destined one is at the core of so much temporal magic. He will travel forward and backwards in time and across worlds. I’m afraid it makes reading his future that much more difficult”
The hedgehog smiled gently, “Who would have thought the only one of the triplets born without the colouration and spines of our bloodline would be the most important of all?”
The oracle chuckled, “Yes, green, pink and brown- that’s an odd one out, isn’t it? Although I do keep tabs on the lad- suffice to say, he isn’t so odd any more. Blue, he is. And with spines fused through a happy accident of science. You’d not recognise him now”
“A mother always recognises her children, old friend. Tell me, oracle- how did this come to happen? I cannot imagine a scientific incident occurring in the home of the peaceful foster family I left him with as an infant”
“Alas once more,” the oracle paused for a moment, “There was a terrible accident. Sonic’s foster parents… are no more. I sensed temporal anomalies near their home. But by the time I knew, it was too late. I’m afraid the attack came from the future”
The hedgehog grimaced, pained to have wrapped up an innocent couple in the dreadful prophecy, “It can only be Doctor Robotnik”
“Perhaps. Only time will tell, as is so often the case with temporal magic. But fear not, my lady. For your son has found a new family- and has surrounded himself with friends. He is happy and he is loved. And, more good news, he’s even saved the world twice”
“My, my…” the hedgehog smiled, “the smallest triplet child of Queen Aleena Hedgehog, twofold a saviour… and he has no idea royal blood flows through his veins”
