Word of mouth is a powerful tool. With the right combination of words, delivered to the right people, before all too long a message can spread across the planet. And so it was with Sonic’s exploits. Word was getting around Mobius that the heroic hedgehog who had pushed Robotnik back in the past had returned and was working to save the planet Zone by Zone. It gave the people hope.
But word of mouth can also spread things you may not want to get too far afield. And, suffice to say, word soon got around of Sonic’s recent escapade in the Hill Top Zone. While the people of the Hill Top Tribe may have revered Sonic as a gift from the gods, but more cynical Mobians grew concerned when they heard of his missteps. True, Sonic had come out on top in the end, but he’d allowed himself to be captured in the first place. If he’d been blasted into deep space with no hope of rescue, hope for Mobius’ rescue would likely have been extinguished too.
None of this was lost on Amy Rose. She watched tensely as people in her village gossiped, hoping not to be overheard by the stationed Trooper Badniks. Amy hated having Troopers on watch in her village, particularly as it made movement rather tricky for her following her eventful evening in the Chemical Plant Zone. She’d taken to wearing a disguise if ever she needed to get out and about during the day. Before her run-in with Robotnik, she could have probably blended into any crowd. Given there weren’t very many pink hedgehogs about- possibly no others, in fact- Amy had precious little choice but to keep her head down so as not to cause a problem for her fellow villagers.
The fact of the matter was Amy had created so much noise lately and aggravated Robotnik so greatly that her very presence in her own home village was a danger to everyone around her. But, at the same time, there was no turning back now- she’d started down the path of crusading against Robotnik, there was nothing for it but to go all in.
“Well it’s all well and good celebrating but what did he really achieve this time? A couple of Badniks isn’t much in the grand scheme of things and he nearly got shot into space. A bit less luck on his side and that’d have been us done for.”
Amy knew eavesdropping was rude but the conversation her neighbours was having was pretty well relevant to her interests.
“He’s a risk taker though, isn’t he? That’s what superheroes do.”
“Fat lot of good that’d do him halfway through the stars. ‘I’ll never set foot on my home planet ever again but at least I was proactive in my decision making’.”
“I get your point but he did get out of it, didn’t he? So no big deal.”
“Yeah, no big deal this time. But what about the next time? A pitfall trap isn’t exactly sophisticated stuff. If Sonic the Hedgehog can make a mistake like that, it makes me wonder if he’s really the right hedgehog for the job.”
Amy felt something in the pit of her stomach urging her to make an important life choice. She had to get involved with Sonic’s fight, somehow. She just had to help. But for her to step out of line right now, she’d just as likely be shot on sight by the Troopers. True, they weren’t much for aim but she could hardly take that risk, especially not if it meant an innocent party might get caught in the crossfire. It wasn’t as if she could simply ask to meet Sonic, but having angered Robotnik, Amy knew she was probably on the “laser-blast with extreme prejudice” list rather than the “remand in custody” list. But more than just helping Sonic and his friends, she had to do this for herself. She’d gotten a taste for action and she needed more. But how to join the dots? That was the question.
“Oh, Amy!” one of her neighbours waved to her, “What do you reckon to Sonic’s blunder in the Hill Top Zone? We reckon you’ll have an opinion on it, our little outspoken miss!”
“Well, why not?” Amy asked, sauntering over to the pair, “It pays to have an opinion- and to be outspoken, especially in the face of people like Robotnik who want to shut us up.”
Amy’s neighbour rolled their eyes, “Spoken like a true orator.”
Amy ignored this barb, “I think Sonic made an honest mistake. And, sure, it was almost a costly one. But that’s to be expected in a dangerous line of work like- well, call it what you like, superheroism I suppose. There isn’t really a better word I can think of. The point is, Sonic’s putting himself on the line every single day to save each and every one of us. I think the least we can do is give him a little bit of slack when he makes an error in judgement in the name of freeing the planet.”
The other neighbour chuckled, “Crikey, Amy, the way you speak about him, anyone would think you were his girlfriend!”
A lightbulb went off in Amy’s head. How better to ensure her meeting with Sonic? How better to ensure she was captured- even if used as bait- rather than killed? Amy smirked, “Well, as a matter of fact, if you must know…”
Amy Rose was about to make word of mouth work for her.
