Sonic’s first trip as Super Sonic was short and mercifully uneventful. Eventually turning back to his normal, cool, blue self, Sonic found himself on the ground next to a lengthy dual trail of flaming scorch marks which led directly to his Power Sneakers.
“Wow!” Sonic exclaimed to himself, having no memory of the jaunt, “What happened?”
Sonic got to his feet and looked around, “Man, where am I now?” The boggy stickiness behind him and the marshy foliage clued him in to his location, “Looks like the Swampland Zone!”
Suddenly, a voice cried out and Sonic spun around in its direction, “Help! Help! Glub…”
“Help, help, glub?” Sonic repeated, before realising “glub” wasn’t so much a word as it was the sound of someone drowning.
Racing to the source of the noise, Sonic spotted a pair of animal tails sticking out of the largest swamp in the Zone. Sonic talked to himself, unwittingly doing so as a coping mechanism to help him assess the situation, “The swamp! Looks like a couple of guys have fallen in! Hey, they’re in big trouble!”
The swamp had a mean pull of an undercurrent to it and rescuing the two animals in danger wasn’t going to be easy. Sonic grabbed at one of the animals’ bushy tails and pulled hard, “Hold still, dudes! Gonna have to pull you out one at a time!”
With one huge yank, Sonic pulled a fox- barely more than a cub- to safety at the bank of the swamp. As the goop dripped off him and his otherwise pristine red and white shoes, the fox gasped for breath, relieved to be alive, “Phew! Thanks, mister! I thought I was done for…!”
Sonic peered at the swamp and his heart sank, “Uh oh… I’m so sorry. It looks like it’s too late for your buddy”
The fox held back a laugh, seeing where this conversation was going, “There is nobody else, mister- I was all alone!”
“But…” Sonic pointed at the swamp, “But I saw two tails!”
“That’s right,” the fox said with pride, “And they were both mine- see?”
The youngster turned and, sure enough, two bushy orange tails with white fluffy tips waved behind him, both very much attached to him.
“And if I spin them like this,” the fox demonstrated, taking off into mid-air to Sonic’s delighted surprise, “I can fly! For a short time, anyway”
Sonic was impressed, “Hey, not bad little guy! My name’s Sonic- what do they call you, pal?”
The fox hovered in mid-air using his appendages like a helicopter’s blades, “My real name’s Miles Prower” He rolled his eyes and stuck out his tongue, clearly not fond of his given name, “But everyone calls me Tails!”
Sonic shrugged and chuckled, “It figures… So, Tails, need someone to help you home?”
Tails landed next to Sonic, “I, uh… I’m kind of between homes at the moment”
“I know how that goes, pal. Hey, if you’re looking for a place to live, do you wanna come with me to my home in the Green Hill Zone?”
“That’d be great! But the Green Hill Zone’s two hundred miles west of here! How are we gonna get there this side of next month?”
“Oh, buddy,” Sonic smiled, “I think you’re gonna like this next part. Try to keep up”
Sonic put on a burst of speed and dashed over the horizon.
Tails gave a huge grin. Taking off with a run, he spun his namesakes behind him to propel him forwards like the fan on a hovercraft, “I’ll be right behind you!”
