Combating Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a modern form of slavery. It is the illegal trade of people for the purposes of commercial gain – through sexual exploitation and forced labor.

According to a September 2017 report from the International Labor Organization (ILO) and Walk Free Foundation, an estimate of 40.3 million people from approximately 136 countries are victims of modern day slavery; 24.9 million in forced labor and 15.4 million in forced marriage. 71 percent of modern slavery victims are female, and one in four victims are children.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign: The Blue Campaign is the unified voice for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) efforts to combat human trafficking. The campaign works in collaboration with law enforcement, government, non-governmental and private organizations to combat human trafficking.

Human Trafficking in America’s Schools The guide helps school officials understand how human trafficking impacts schools, recognize the indicators of possible child trafficking, as well as develop policies, protocols, and partnerships to address and prevent the exploitation of children.

Human Trafficking Awareness Training Human trafficking awareness videos by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Blue Campaign are designed to spread awareness of the signs and indicators of human trafficking.

CNN Freedom Project This CNN special project shares the voices of the victims, highlights success stories, and offers the ways you can help end modern-day slavery locally and globally.

Global Report on Trafficking in Persons (PDF) The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) 2016 report provides a global overview of the patterns and flows of trafficking in persons, and the status of country-level legislation and the criminal justice response to the trafficking crime. The report also presents an analysis of trafficking in persons in the broader perspective of migration and conflict, and contains in-depth analyses by region.

Polaris Project Polaris, an active organization in the global fight to eradicate modern slavery and restore freedom to survivors of human trafficking, operates the National Human Trafficking Hotline serving victims and survivors of human trafficking and the anti-trafficking community in the United States since 2007.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Since 1984, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has served as the national resource center for families, victims, private organizations, law enforcement and the public on issues relating to missing and sexually exploited children.

Human Rights Educators USA Human Rights Educators USA is a network dedicated to building a culture of human rights. The site provides lesson plans, films, books, and additional resources on combating human trafficking.

ECPAT USA ECPAT USA works to end child sexual exploitation, including trafficking through policy, training, and innovative outreach to politicians, educators, and the private industry.

ATEST - The Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking The Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking (ATEST) is a U.S. based coalition of 13 organizations that advocates for solutions to prevent and end all forms of human trafficking and modern slavery around the world.

By working locally to reduce people’s vulnerability and help those in slavery gain freedom, Free the Slaves works in a number of countries with local organizations to ensure sustainable results.

Child Labor Coalition The National Education Association is a member of this national coalition that is aimed at ending exploitative child labor – including human trafficking and slavery– in the United States and around the world.

Kailash Satyarthi Foundation This foundation, established by Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Kailash Satyarthi of India, is focused on ending child slavery.
