The clinician chooses two sounds that are not part of the child's inventory that are maximally different.
Phase 1: Imitation phase
The minimal pair cards are presented and the client is told to imitate the clinician. When the child has 75% accuracy across two sessions the next phase is implemented.
Phase 2: Spontaneous production phase
The word pairs are produced without the clinician's model. This phase ends when the client is 90% accurate without a model across 3 sessions.

Initiated by Elbert and Gierut (1986), the maximal oppositions approach picks two target sounds that are very different from each other. Research by Gierut (1990) shows that maximal opposition therapy promotes more generalization as opposed to minimal pair contrast therapy.
These cards are an example of minimal pairs used in maximal opposition therapy.
The child can color in the "k" or "v" depending on which sound he produces.
