Rocks and Minerals is an event that mainly focuses on identification of various Rocks and Minerals, as listed on the official list. Along with identification, much like Forestry, Ornithology, or Fossils, you must research extra information on each specimen. This information includes, but is not limited to, composition, HCI test results, color, hardness, luster, mineral habit, magnetism, polymorphs, methods of formation, classification, and environments that they are found in. There is a binder allowed for this event, but the binder will not save you if you simply copy and paste information or print out websites. It is important to not only know how your binder works, but know what your notes say and the purpose they serve. Helpful resources are below, Wikipedia is highly recommended for individual rocks.
Each team may bring with them a three-ring binder of any size containing information in any form from any source attached using the available rings. Sheet protectors, lamination, tabs, and labels are allowed. If the event is structured in stations, nothing can be removed from the binder. Along with the binder, each team may bring a field guide, a magnifying glass, and one copy of the official Rocks & Minerals list. Resources to purchase are linked below.Â
