Welcome to the new SGIS Handbook
TRANSGENDER ATHLETE GUIDELINES
Guidelines to support transgender student-athletes, coaches, Athletic Directors, and the general community.
The SGIS Sports Group allows students to participate in sports competitions in a manner consistent with their gender identity. Schools are not required to inform hosting schools of any transgender athletes in their teams unless these athletes are deemed to have a significant physical advantage.
In sports where transgender athletes are deemed to have a physical advantage over others, a determination on a case-by-case basis - the SGIS Sports Group Executive will be the final arbiter in these cases if required.
In some contact sports, the nature of contact and physicality of sports may preclude transgender athletes from participating. This will be determined in the organization phase of this event, with schools informed of this stipulation. The responsibility is of each school to ensure that participation is suitable for any child whilst considering the rights of other athletes. Clear and confidential communication between the host school and the participant school should be with the required internal people responsible at each school.
Hosting schools should, wherever possible, ensure that there is a private changing area, such as a single-stall restroom stall with a door, for any student who has a need or desire for increased privacy, regardless of the underlying reason. If possible, gender-neutral toilets should also be available.
No student should experience any kind of harassment, intimidation, or discrimination, and organizing schools will deal with these matters, as serious issues, should they arise.
