Diana and Eric sit outside near the tent in the darkness of the misty wasteland. Both are looking away into the distance; Eric mid-conversation, but mostly to himself.
. . . Meat 'n Bun, down on 8th? Basically all the drive-throughs. Or just take it into the hills. I'm pretty sure it'll be a convertible. Or maybe a Suzuki Samurai.
Just stop. I don't want to hear about your drivers license right now.
Well, sorr-rry. Just trying to find something to look forward to. You know? When we get back?
Did you know Martha was like us?
What do you mean?
From *our* world. Then she got trapped in a world of dungeons and dragons and Vengers and Tiamats and ...
(waves her hand to indicate the hellish landscape around them)
Martha? Like, *old* Martha? The one who's... *old?*
Yeah. Exactly. Why do you think she hates Dungeonmaster so much? She and her family were "champions" once, too.
But something happened to her family.
And she's been alone ever since. Trapped. And Dungeonmaster never found her a way home, either.
They both fall silent as a gentle wind wafts the Mournlands mist around them.
Encounter die ⬙(D6) = 2. No encounter.
Well, better wake Presto and Ginga for their shift.
Presto, head on hand, does his best to keep his head aloft. Ginga, laying nearby, twitches his ears as the winds and mist shift around them.
Encounter die ⬙(D6) = 5. Encounter.
Presto's AWARENESS (7), rolls with a boon ⬙ (12, 19) = Failure!
(soft woof)
Oh, Ginga. It's noth--
Suddenly, a huge, monstrously mutated beast rears up out of the mists, its roar thunderous!
**ROOOOAR!**
Monster Attack 🎲(6) = Stunning Gaze!
Presto's WIL (18), rolls a ⬙ (11) = Success!
G-- gu-- guh-- GUYS!!!

Ginga's EVADE (12), rolls a ⬙ (14) = Failure!
The beast lunges forward, snapping at Ginga and raising the dog up as it bites down upon him.
Damage D12 = 11
**Yelp!**
Ginga's limp body is tossed aside into the dust.
Wha-- What was that?
Ginga! NOoooo!
(rushing over to Ginga's body, he doffs his hat to cast a spell)
"Roses are red, We're in trouble..."
But the beast snaps its head instinctively, nose flaring at the mere whiff of magic. It SNARLS again, slashing down upon Presto's back as he is mid-spellcast.
Monster Reaction Attack = Damage 🎲(D6) = 6
Complete the spellcast? Presto's WIL (18), rolls a ⬙(18) = Yikes. Barely.
Ahhh!!
(scrambling to turn to face the beast, struggling to maintain the spell)
"Surround us both, In a protective BUBBLE!"
STONE BUBBLE SHIELD (at Power Level 2) = 4 Willpower Points
ELEMENTALISM (14), rolls with a bane ⬙(2, 19) = Fails!
A steady stream of small soap bubbles comes wafting out of Presto's hat.
Oh, come on!? Really? I said BUBBLE!
GLASSES OF COMPETENCE = 3 Willpower Points
BUBBLE SHIELD (at Power Level 2) = 4 Willpower Points
ELEMENTALISM (14), rolls with a bane ⬙(4, 19) = Fails! Oh, snaps.
The beast seems unconcerned about the bubbles.
Uhhhh. Five more minutes, mom...
Eric! Get up! Monster! Monster!!
Aw! Already?!

Okay, what--
(clocking the beast)
what-- WHAT IS THAT! And can I go back to bed?!
Diana comes scrambling after, extending the Staff of Acrobats, and not letting any surprise show.
Hey! Dummy! If you are waiting to get MORE ugly, just come over here and let us bash your face in!
Snarl! Grr-garruff, **ROAR!!!**
Monster Attack 🎲(3) = Raking Claws!
The monster rears up toward Diana, its arms and claws flailing about with deadly certainty...
What, are you stupid AND ugly? Over here, ya jerk!
GUARDIAN = 2 WP
Damage 2D8 = 6
SHIELD OF THE CAVALIER = 2WP, reduce 2d6 (7)
... and the monster comes crashing down upon Eric, or more accurately, his glowing white aura from his Shield.
**WOWWWAAAARRRR!**
Presto, make a ELEMENTALISM roll.
Presto's ELEMENTALISM (14), rolls a ⬙ (6) = Success!
Ah! It hates magic!
Oh, great. NOW he tells me!

GM FOOTNOTES:
Unfortunately, there's no guidance on rolling for random encounters in the Dragonbane core rulebook. It mentions them, but offers no table. Instead, there are tables in is companion Adventures book, but they are very bespoke to the Misty Vale micro-setting. In addition, they give basically a 50/50 chance by making 1-6 out of a D12 be "no encounter" and the remaining numbers each a specific encounter. I'd rather have something other than a coin flip as the odds, although admitedly not every number 7-12 yields a combat encounter.
I decided to use the Quest generator in the gamemaster chapter, instead. It takes a D6, with a 5 being an encounter. If I can figure a way to use the other results, I'll incorporate them but otherwise I'll ignore them. Yes, these odds are too low, but in a solo adventure like this I'm OK with that.
I think I should have PUSHED the roll to try a re-roll with the Stone Bubble Shield (using Presto's Apprentice Hat, I am allowing him to cast things unlearned from his spell list, but it's with a bane.) By using the Glasses, he's down an extra 3 WP. Of course, I wonder-- should I have pushed AND done the glasses, too?! ...
