As the giant brain-shaped object on the dias collects the pulses of red light from myriad attached pipes and tubes, the Piece of the Seven-Part Rod glows green, hovering above it.
Below the obect, the amorphous goo shaped into the persona of Landro turns the attention of the three heroes and Ginga to the giant robotic Archano-sentinel that emerges from the wall behind them.
Okay, okay, okay! Wait a second, everyone!
(adjusting his glasses, taking a beat)
So, taking the Rod piece turns everything off, but we can transfer the Landro consciousness into an id crystal, but that's currently part of a giant robot soldier?
That is a summary of what I have said.
Right. Okay. So, can we talk amongst ourselves for a second, please?
Without bothering for a response, Presto already reaches out to walk his friends backwards, which happens to be closer to the opening on the floor that serves as access to the Graymatter Engine Room.
Everyone, I do have a plan, but it's very risky and I have no idea if it will work. Do you trust me?
Yeah, buddy. Of the three of us here, you're the one I trust the most. Including myself.
Of course, Presto. I owe you that much, and more.
Yip!
Diana and Eric? Form up and get ready. Ginga, wait for my cue.
The group comes out of a huddle to form a dramatic tableaux, each readying for a battle. After a beat, Presto resolutely reaches in to his hat, pulling out a chunky-sized TV remote control. He points toward the giant brain.
DISPEL (at Power Level 3) = 6 Willpower Points
ELEMENTALISM (14), rolls a ⬙(14) = SUCCESS!
Electricity flares in waves around the giant brain, filling the room with intense flickering light and crackling sounds!
Presto does his best to stand firm against the reeling power that courses from the remote and his sheer willpower.
What-- what are you doing?
We're going to need to break this into rounds.
Draw for Initiative.

Wow. So perfect.
Ginga! FETCH!
Bark!
Suddenly, Ginga BLINKS out and re-appears a few meters atop the giant brain. Immediately, he snatches the Piece with his jaws!
The Arcano-sentinel turns to Ginga. Landro tilts their head, curious.
And Ginga blinks back to the heroes, the rod piece retreived in its mouth.
G-- Good boy.
What an inter--
With a resounding "Vvvvoooommmm" descresndo, the lights immediately wink out. Landro's body plunges down, back into the gray viscous goo in the basin under the brain. The Sentinel relaxes, all light gone from its body.
The only light source comes from Diana's softly glowing Staff of Acrobatics.
Presto! What did you do!?
I asked you to trust me!
(taking the piece from Ginga and getting to his feet)
But, Landro?
Well, yeah! Come on, Eric, let's get this sentinel open and get the crystal! If it's a computer, why not simply turn it on and off ag--
He stops as the room illuminates once more, this time in a dull, low, pulsing red.
One minute until self-destruct.
Uh, I'm guessing *that's* why not?
Finish the Initiative order for Round One.
Eric rushes to Presto's side, slamming his shield into a groove of the sentinel's body and straining for leverage.
Eric's STR (16), with a boon from Presto's help, rolls a ⬙(4, 13) = Success!
A quick jet of sparks erupts as Eric's shield pops open the sentinel. Within a mass of gears and pipes, there are several gems and crystals, including a large 30cm-long purple-grey crystal similarly hued to the graymatter.
Let's go, let's go!
Round TWO, draw for Initiative.

Now what?
Take that to the pool!
Presto turns and runs to the giant brain. He tosses the Piece of the Seven Rods to its former place. The piece clatters atop the brain, but all is still.
You're going to have to spend a little WP. Also, make an ELEMENTALISM roll.
C'mon, you dumb thing!
ELEMENTALISM (14), rolls a ⬙(12) = Success!
Starting with a slow strobe effect then growing to full power, the rod piece floats in flashes of green light and the entire room grows with illumination and a resurging HUMMING sound.
(to himself)
Perfect!
(then)
Wait for it, Eric...
The graymatter ooze at the base of the brain begins to swirl, then forms the familiar shape of Landro's persona.
Hello. I am Landro. I am so pleased to be able to greet you. Won't you have a seat? Can I get you anything?
How about *we* get you an id crystal?
Eric plunges the tip of the crystal into the graymatter ooze, which begins to lap against the crystal and sharing its luminesce with it.
Fifty seconds until self-destruct.
Hmm. What an interesting situation.
Making a DEFAULT ATTRIBUTE roll for Landro to see how efficient the downlowd is.
Landro's DEFAULT (15), rolls a ⬙(4) = Success! It's like MAGIC
The form of Landro dissolves and returns to the goo. The id crystal in Eric's hand now begins to pulse with a slow, steady light.
Am I . . . free?
Okay, then! Come on, Ginga! Fetch!
Yay!
Once again, Ginga BLINKS out and re-appears a few meters atop the giant brain. However, this time, as he snatches the Piece with his jaws, the energies of the brain are still active! Ginga half-growls, half-whines through the pain as he pulls at the piece.
Making a DEFAULT ATTRIBUTE roll for Ginga.
Ginga's DEFAULT (12), rolls a ⬙(18) = No!
Damage (d10) = 5
*whine!*
Oh, no! Ginga! Hold on! You can do it!
to be continued in 6.17 Graymatter Engine, Part II . . .
GM FOOTNOTES:
It's very interesting playing Saturday morning heroes, in the sense that a less scrupulous party of adventurers would have much more complicated reactions when interacting with the game world-- like saving Landro or not. These heroes would absolutely save them, wouldn't they? But I was NOT going to force the characters to traverse the entire dungeon again simply to get a crystal that happened to end up in the left foot for some arbitrary reason. Keep the id crystal close - naturally within the sentinels in the first place.
That said, it's time to complicate these heroes a bit, to get Presto's hands a little dirty.
I'm so glad the first initiative draw above ended up that way. I really want to get out of Eberron more quickly. 😅 Ginga got lucky with his initiative draws in general.
