Theme/Series of Lessons (if Not applicable, put N/A. If it is part of a series, of lessons, tell me, give a BRIEF description of the overall and tell me where this particular lesson fits):
In this series of lessons for the next three weeks, we will be going over the animal species and what classes each type of animal fits into. These lessons will teach students about mammals and how similar and different each animal and its class, and they are still animals. These lessons will also show students how humans are part of the animal kingdom, and how different and similar we all are to other animals.
Time (is this a 1 day 50 minute lesson, 5 day 1 hour lesson, once a week over a month lesson….):
This is a once a day lesson, and will have the duration period of 1 hour and 15 minutes. The class will meet once a week.
The topic of animals will be a subject that continues for a month, giving students plenty of time to learn about this, and this is the first lesson to start off the subject matter at hand.
What do the students already know? (This could be the Intro or they have learned information before starting this lesson):
The students already know the names of animals, and some of the differences in the species. They do not know just how may animals are included in the mammal’s class, and how closely humans are related to some animals.
Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish):
The goal of this lesson is to broaden students minds to the idea of just how big the animal kingdom is. So often kids only think about the animals they see in movies and do not think about the big picture and how many different classes and types of animals there really are.
Materials:
Colored pencils, crayons, paper, stickers of animals, labels with names and classifications of animals. Smartboard presentation using inspiration, tablets.
Procedure:
Students will each be given writing materials, paper, and different colored pencils to differentiate each item the may need to indicate. Students will each have a tablet, stickers with different types of animals, and labels to classify the animal species.
The teacher will show animals on the smartboard and the students will be expected to try and classify said animal into its species category/class using tablets to search and the labels handed out at the beginning of class.
The students should also draw lines with the different colored pencils or crayons to connect the labeled animals into their species category.
Assessment (How will the students’ show you that the objective has been met):
(Note: the assessment does not have to be a paper and pencil test)
The assessment for this lesson will be if the students correctly labeled the animals and species correctly. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to verbally answer questions and classify the animals we talked about that day. There will be a test giving using the tablets that includes pictures and multiple choice answers for names and species of the animals.
A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be Included:
This class will be discussing normal everyday and out-of-the-box animals and what species or class they belong to. The goal will be for students to look at the characteristics of animals and use critical thinking to remember and find out which class (mammal, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians, invertebrates, ect).
The point of this lesson is to look at the similarities and differences between species and to compare the mammals to humans. It is important for students to know that the human race is part of the animal kingdom. I want to inspire students to learn and discover about animals and classifications in their own time, and to truly enjoy learning. This lesson also includes hands-on activities and a multiple choice test at the end to ensure the correct information was conveyed to all students present.

Standards/Framework (State Standards, Content Standards, InTASC Standards)
Standard 1: Learner development.
The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
Standard 2: Learning differences.
The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.
Theme/Series of Lessons (if Not applicable, put N/A. If it is part of a series, of lessons, tell me, give a BRIEF description of the overall and tell me where this particular lesson fits):
Humans and animals and how our features are different
Time (is this a 1 day 50 minute lesson, 5 day 1 hour lesson, once a week over a month lesson….):
This lesson theme will continue for a week everyday for an hour and 30 minutes each day.
What do the students already know? (This could be the Intro or they have learned information before starting this lesson):
The students already know that pets and humans are different, but they do not know some of the key features and behaviors that create these differences.
Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish):
The students will learn what sets people apart from animals and their own pets. They will learn the things that we as humans are able to do that animals cannot. We will also learn about some animals like racoons and monkeys that share some similar features without being humans and why that is.
Materials:
Students will bring pictures of their pets to class and we will be discussing what makes each pet different. Fish, birds, cats, dogs, ect.
Procedure:
we will use the pictures of the students pets to discuss the differences in animals and from there go on to compare them to people. We will look at features belonging to pets, and features belonging to their owners. For example, look at noses. A dog can have a nose, and so do we. But they are different. We will learn how to find these differences and similarities and what makes us stand apart from the other animals.
Assessment (How will the students’ show you that the objective has been met):
(Note: the assessment does not have to be a paper and pencil test)
I will give children coloring pages with a person and an animal. We will discuss the features that are similar and different, and the students will color those in as we get to them to prove they followed the lesson and understood what we are learning about. They students will also be tasked with bringing a picture of their pet to class and showing and talking about their animal.
A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be Included:
We will start by introducing the lesson. The children will bring pictures of their pets and we will start the day by them introducing the name of their animals and telling what kind of pet it is. We will then move one to talking about how humans are part of the animal kingdom too, but how we are different from all other animals and set apart. I will give each student a coloring sheet with a picture of a pet on it, and one with a person on it. As we talk about the differences between the features of the species, the students will color in that particular feature until the pictures are complete.
