Students will be able to follow the direction of their role as Historian, Geographer, Tour Guide, and Driver.
Students will be able to analyze the historical difference of the 1950’s to today (2019).
Students will be able to apply the research they found individually to our Texas created Powerpoint.
Materials/Resources Needed:
Some kind of technology, i.e. a computer
Pencil
Folder
Notebook/Paper
Getting to Know Each Other:
Dice Breaker
What do you want to be when you grow up?
What do you like to do for fun?
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?
If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive who would it be?
What is your favorite movie?
What is your favorite book?
Objective/Purpose (For the student's benefit, explain what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson and why these objectives are important to accomplish.):
Students will have the knowledge of the state of Texas and its role in historic Route 66. Students will be able to tell of places to visit, eat, and rest along the journey.
Model (If you will be demonstrating the skill or competence, how will this be done?):
Each group will be put in a group assigned to researching one state on Route 66. The group will create a powerpoint presentation about what they learned about their state. The powerpoint will include the history of the route in your state, geography of the road in the state and what tribal lands it crossed, top 2 sites to visit, one overnight location in the 1950s, amount of time to travel and costs to travel to sites.
Students will be provided different jobs; historian, geographer, tour guide, and driver.
The historian will identify the history of Route 66 in Texas from opening to closing. They will choose 3-5 facts that contribute to the historical story of Route 66 in Texas.
The geographer will navigate the route needed to take to get to the 2 sites you will visit and the 1 motel/ hotel you will stay in. They will also determine which Native American tribes Route 66 passes through.
The tour guide will be responsible for finding 2 sites to visit and a hotel/ motel to stay in overnight.
The driver will figure out the amount of gas needed to cross your state as well as the cost of gas in your state in the 1950s. Include time of travel through your state using the speed limit in the 1950's. (T=D/R)
Check for Understanding (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have learned the objectives.):
Each assigned role will have a place on our site where they can upload the information that they find and Taylor and I will be able to see what all they accomplished and the validity of the information they found.
Standards:
-ISTE: Empowered Learner: 1a: Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
-6.H1.2: Explain the causes and effects of interactions between cultures and civilizations
-6.SL.4: Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation. (this will come as we progress through the project)
Closure (What method of review and evaluation will be used to complete the lesson?):
Students will be asked what they learned from their assigned role?
This is our powerpoint from lesson #1 that our students created.
