This unit helps students to examine the different experiences travellers had on the mother road. Specifically, students will examine basic information regarding their assigned Route 66 state; design a trip for a tourism board, and then see if an African American family can take the same trip. The trip design takes place during 1955 and involves the students using the primary resources, the Green Book. The unit culminates in a two voice poem. These lessons have been tested with middle schoolers, but make adjustments as you see fit. Subpages have student friendly websites that you can use in a virtual context.
