Introduction Activity
In order for the students and teachers to get to know each other, we will play Two Truths & a Lie. During this time the students and teachers will also say their names and go further into discussion about their truths and lies.
There will also be a brief presentation on the basic knowledge of Route 66 after the get to know you activity. The teachers will present a Google slideshow that has pictures of Route 66. The teachers will tell the students facts and the historical significance of Route 66 while presenting this slideshow. This will provide the students background information before completing the WebQuest.
Activity
The students will then complete the WebQuest. Each student will count off by four and their number will determine their role when completing the WebQuest. The teachers will then go over the directions of the WebQuest with the students. Then the students will break off and work on their own to complete their role that is explained on the WebQuest. Students will then use computers to research their information and take notes. The teachers will go around to each student to help when needed. Once the students find all the information they need, they will create a slideshow presentation to present to the class.
Assessment
In order to make sure that students effectively learned the history of Route 66 in their states, we will have a small group discussion when the students are done completing the WebQuest. The teachers will ask the students to share what they learned and what they included on their powerpoint.
Powerpoint Notes on Background Knowledge of Route 66 Presentation
Route 66 was part of the US Highway System. It opened on November 26, 1926.
A highway that goes across the majority of the US
It starts in Chicago, IL going through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California
This highway was used for several reasons. During the 1930’s the Dust Bowl forced people to leave their homes and go west, taking Route 66.
Some just enjoyed the highway for its beautiful scenery and as a vacation.
Route 66 has many popular stops along the way. These include hotels, restaurants, businesses, and attractions.
1985 Route 66 was removed from the US Highway System when more practical highways were built.
Today, people work to preserve it so that future generations can see it and can be educated on what Route 66 used to be.
