Objectives:
SWBAT to describe the differences between a primary and secondary source.
SWBAT to find and analyze primary documents to examine the experiences of African Americans on Route 66.
SWBAT to compare and contrast the varying experiences on the road.
Materials: Ruth and the Green Book, Molly’s route 66 Adventure, Computers
TASKS:
Read Molly's Route 66 Adventure and compare to our Lesson 1 adventure through AZ.
-Secondary source: created by someone who did not experience or participate in the event first-hand
Read Ruth and The Green Book (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Emskq2908k).
-Compare and contrast Molly and Ruth experiences traveling.
-Create Venn Diagram or T-Chart for evidence
-Guided Questions: What emotions did the girls experience? How did their travel experiences differ? Why did their experiences differ? What would their travel experiences be like today? What determined their different experiences decades ago?

Introduce activity/assessment: Ruth's Route 66 Experience
Ruth's Route 66 Experience
-Map out Ruth's adventure through Route 66 by using the Green Book to see where she would be able to go.
-Create a poster to show her adventure.
Pre-assessment:
Write down what we learned from the previous Monday along with what we know and want to know about the green book.
Procedures:
Students will begin with writing what they know about route 66 and the green book
We will read the Arizona Section of Molly’s route 66 Adventure
We will read Ruth and the Green Book
In a group discussion, we will make a venn diagram on the board, comparing the books and their experiences with travel
Students will go to computers and look at two websites, one with the green book and one about the jim crow era.
We will discuss primary vs. secondary source
On Canva, students will create a scrapbook page for Ruth and her experience if she were to travel route 66 in Arizona
To close, students will share their page and we will draw a map of the places they found where Ruth could eat and stay
