The Standard Operating Procedure for safely responding to a Road Traffic Collision (RTC)
When at the scene of an RTC you should keep your emergency lights and matrix board turned on, with your vehicle angled towards the road in a fend-off position. This prevents your vehicle from rolling into you and causing injury when you are on the road managing the RTC if another driver were to collide with it.
With your high visibility jacket equipped you create a sterile work environment using cones. When placing these cones, never turn your back on traffic and give a great distance of warning to allow drivers enough time to slow down safely (100m). The cones should be slowly angled merging one lane into the other. Do not step out onto the road unless you are placing a cone.
If there are any injuries or fires call for an ambulance or the fire service immediately. Ensure that they do not obstruct the road when they stop their vehicle.
While waiting for an ambulance or fire engine to arrive you should make use of police broadcast (/pbc) to alert road users of the collision, giving them an extra warning to slow down or re-plan their journey.
If necessary, request Roadcrew and wait for them to be attend before removing your cones. When you leave the scene of the collision, ensure all of your cones are picked up to avoid another collision in the future. Notify road users with another police broadcast.
