The Hidden Gem* project is being introduced this year in RadhaRang Foundation yearly activities. The concept of a hidden gem was initiated by Dr Ashok Sarnaik. Along with his concept and thoughts behind the GEM, he also donated RS 3 lacs for this project. The RRF committee has selected this year’s Hidden Gem AKANKSHA KUMBHAR of Pat High School. On behalf of you all, we wish Akankasha great success in athletics field and hope she achieves every success. The award ceremony was held at Gurunath Sarnaik Sabhagruha in Madyachiwadi High School.
*Hidden Gem Award*
The academically “highly ranked” students get ample recognition in the community. They are easy to identify and RRF has several awards designated for them. There are however exceptionally talented students who do not receive such recognition through standard academic evaluation. These are the *Hidden Gems*
For example, two of the greatest Marathi poets, Shanta Shelke and Bahinibai Chaudhary came from completely different backgrounds. Shanta Shelke was an accomplished scholar who rose to the rank of Professor in a prestigious university, whereas Bahinabai had no formal education but had nonetheless a profound influence on Marathi literature. Both were real gems. Shanta Shelke received much acclaim during her life and she was the obvious gem in pure daylight. Bahinabai on the other hand was the *Hidden Gem* who was discovered after her death.
The idea of the RRF *Hidden Gem* award is to recognize exceptionally talented children who may not be ranked 1st or 2nd in the class. If discovered early on, they can be encouraged, supported and mentored to polish their talents and helped to achieve greater heights. The talent could be in any field such as sports, scientific aptitude, art etc.
The “Hidden Gem” committee has a difficult task of identifying eligible children and we thank them for their hard work. If anyone knows of a *Hidden Gem*, please contact Mr. Hemant Khanolkar.
This year’s *Hidden Gem* is very deserving of this award. We wish her continued success.
