Creative Mixed Media Artworks Inspired by "This is Me!" by Philip Waechter
After reading Philip Waechter's "This is Me!", students embarked on an inspiring creative journey, exploring themes of love, belonging, and nurturing relationships. Over three engaging lessons, they produced mixed-media artworks that highlighted these concepts while reflecting their own individuality.
In the first lesson, students began by creating silhouettes of themselves or someone significant to them using soft pastel crayons. They then experimented with blending and layering colors around the silhouette, representing the intricate nature of relationships. Once the silhouette was removed, they filled the resulting space with patterns and features that conveyed their emotions towards the chosen person, capturing the essence of belonging. Inside the silhouette, they used colored pencils to express deeper feelings.
In the second lesson, students took photos of themselves from the shoulders up using Sketchbook. They then layered vibrant colors and intricate patterns over the images, showcasing their unique personalities, emotions, and character traits.
In the final lesson, students delved into color theory, learning about primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. They practiced blending primary colors to create secondary hues and further mixed those to develop tertiary shades. They also explored complementary colors and their interactions on the color wheel, gaining a richer understanding of visual harmony and balance in their artwork.
The children created a Monet-inspired drawing and painting, and described their artwork using appropriate art vocabulary. They also made paper flowers to create an inspired 'Monet's' garden.
