Orientation: The goal of our Orientation is to get to know the class and to learn how to successfully navigate through canvas and APA format.
Module 1: Introductions: Welcome to CHDV 207, School-Age Curriculum. This course provides information on how to create effective school-age curriculum. This week, students will be introduced to the course structure and learn how to navigate essential components such as discussion boards, journals, and grading criteria. This module sets the foundation for successful participation and engagement throughout the course.
Module 2: Defining Out-of-School Programs: This week, students will delve into defining out-of-school programs, identifying their purpose and importance in supporting school-age children. They will also explore key elements that contribute to creating high-quality programs, such as safety, engagement, and developmental support.
Module 3: Developmental Appropriate Practice (DAP): This week, students will explore developmentally appropriate practices, focusing on creating schedules and environments that meet the unique needs of school-age children. Emphasis will be placed on fostering an engaging, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere to enhance learning and development.
Module 4: What is Curriculum: This week, students will explore various types of curriculum designed for school-age programs, such as thematic, project-based, and integrated curricula. They will also examine different approaches to curriculum implementation, focusing on how to align activities with developmental goals and engage diverse learners effectively.
Module 5: Social Emotional Learning: In module 5, students will delve into creating curriculum centered on social-emotional learning (SEL). The module will emphasize developing strategies to help children build self-awareness, manage emotions, and foster healthy relationships. Through hands-on activities, students will design engaging and inclusive SEL-focused programs for school-age children.
Module 6: STEAM and Creative Expression: This week, students will focus on creating curriculum that supports cognitive and aesthetic development. They will explore strategies for fostering problem-solving, critical thinking, and memory-building skills in children. Additionally, they will design activities that encourage creative expression through art, music, and other forms of aesthetic engagement, promoting well-rounded growth and development.
Module 7: Physical Domain: This week, students will focus on creating curriculum to support the physical domain. This includes promoting physical health through activities that enhance motor skills and overall well-being while exploring behavioral management strategies to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Module 8: Curriculum Project: This week, students will finalize and submit their curriculum project. This comprehensive assignment will consist of eight activity plans (two for each developmental domain), a general schedule, a weekly schedule of activities, and an introduction. The project reflects students' understanding of creating a well-rounded, developmentally appropriate program.
