Orientation: The goal of our Orientation is to get to know the class and to learn how to successfully navigate through canvas and APA format.
Module 1: The Blank Slate: Welcome to CHDV 145: Language and Literacy. This course covers the skills and knowledge needed to effectively plan, document, and implement developmentally appropriate activities and strategies in an emergent curriculum that supports the developing language and literacy skills of children. Literacy plays such a huge role in the developing child. A child's autonomy can come so much from their exposure to books, and the images inside of books. Effective curriculums exposes children to a variety of books and language rich tools. This week we will be defining curriculum and start thinking about building language rich curriculums.
Module 2: Exploring Themes and Books: This week, we will focus on building the foundation of our curriculum project. We will be looking in to various themes, subthemes and books to start building our curriculum project. We will be looking in to some exciting, and meaningful themes to build our curriculum around. Make sure you are looking through our resources for this week to help start our curriculum project. We will also be discussing how to analyzing children's literature books for concepts and appropriateness before actually reading them to children.
Module 3: Language and Early Writing: This week, we will be creating our first activity for the language domain and social-emotional domain. We will be exploring the stages of emergent writing and writing boxes as we look in to creating an activity plan for the language domain. We will also be exploring building literacy through dramatic play, and discussing activities we can use for our activity plan.
Module 4: Implementing Literacy with Art and Movement: This week, we will be creating our first activity plans for the aesthetic domain and physical domain. We will be looking in to how to how art is used as text, and how to create culturally responsive classrooms through literacy and art. We will also be learning about how physical development can be implemented in to other developmental domains, and how to help children develop language skills through movement.
Module 5: Language and Math: This week, we will be creating our first activity plan for the cognitive domain. We will be learning about how connected language development and developing math skills are. Teachers play a huge role in helping children use their language skills to learn math concepts.
Module 6: Analyzing Children's Books: This week, students will be working on their first major assignment by analyzing 5 books to help identify literature components of books.
Module 7: Building a Curriculum Web: This week, we will be building our curriculum web as part of our curriculum project.
Module 8: Extending Literacy to the Home: This week, students will be sharing ideas on how to help parents extend literacy in to their home. Students will also start on drafting their newsletter.
Module 9: Teaching Strategies: This week, students will be learning about effective teaching strategies to implement curriculum in to the classroom.
Module 10: Finalizing Curriculum Project: This week, students will be working on completing their curriculum project. Students will work on making edits to their drafts based on the given feedback, and creating one additional activity plan for each domain. Students should be submitting a total of 10 activity plans for their curriculum project assignment. There will be no assignments due this week. Please take the time to work on your curriculum project assignment.
Module 11: Curriculum Project: This week, students will be compiling all of their hard work on their curriculum project in to one file to submit. Please read through the curriculum project criteria to know what you must submit.
Module 12: Reflection on Language and Literacy: Welcome to the last week of this course. We made it! We will use this week to reflect on our experiences with the course material.
