This course provides information on how to implement quality programs for school-age children. Students learn assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs. Students use standards for quality school-age care to assess quality indicators in the areas of human relationships, indoor and outdoor environments, activities, health, nutrition, safety and administration.
Evaluate the teacher’s role in providing best practices in out-of-school programs.
Apply developmentally appropriate principles and teaching strategies to positively influence school-aged children’s development and learning in out-of-school programs.
Plan, implement, and evaluate age-appropriate curriculum, schedules, and routines for out-of-school programs.
In this dynamic 8-week course, we harness the power of Open Educational Resources (OER) to provide a rich and accessible learning experience. By adopting an OER-based curriculum, we prioritize affordability and inclusivity, ensuring that all students have equal access to high-quality educational materials. Over the span of 8 weeks, participants will engage with a diverse range of freely available resources that not only facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter but also encourage critical thinking and collaborative learning. This format not only reduces financial barriers for students but also promotes the broader dissemination of knowledge. With a focus on OER, this course aims to empower learners to explore, question, and contribute to the academic discourse, fostering a community of open-minded individuals ready to navigate the complexities of the modern world.
As a teacher, it is my duty to master each learning style so I can maximize students learning in my courses. I must be a master at teaching and learning. When looking at my teaching philosophy, I believe that discussions and assignments will guide students learning and pilot their ability to think critically. Each student serves as a student, teacher, and thinker. I use this style of teaching to maximize student’s participation, and to make their voices heard. I use an array of theorists such as Bronfenbrenner, Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget, Kenneth and Mamie Clark and Kohlberg to help students understand development from early childhood to adulthood. I also use real-life stories, and case studies to help students connect theories to their personal, and professional lives. My goal in teaching is to challenge student’s way of thinking to broaden their perspectives on child development by engaging students in new concepts and ideas. New concepts and ideas are being implemented daily.
I consider myself to have an antiracist teaching style. Embracing an anti-racist teaching style is a transformative approach that not only challenges systemic inequalities but also inspires students to become compassionate, critical thinkers. I create online, inclusive environments that recognizes and celebrates diversity to help students feels valued and heard. I work hard at going beyond by acknowledging differences, biases and stereotypes, and encouraging students to question societal norms. My goal is to foster a curriculum that reflects the rich tapestry of human experiences, ensuring that students see themselves and others represented authentically. Through open dialogues, thoughtful reflections, and a commitment to dismantling prejudice, we can inspire students to become advocates for social justice, equipping them with the skills and mindset to contribute positively to a more inclusive and equitable society.
