Orientation: The goal of our Orientation is to get to know the class and to learn how to successfully navigate through canvas and APA format.
Module 1: Introductions: Welcome to CHDV 107, School-Age Development. This course provides information on school-age developmental needs and stages, techniques for interacting positively and effectively with children, and ideas to assist in meeting the wide range of children's needs. The design of schedules, policies, the environment, and activities are based upon the understanding of children's development, special needs, and cultural background.
Module 2: Defining School-Age Programs: This week, we will be looking at the importance of school-age programs. We will be discussing why there is a need for school-age programs, and how school-age programs can impact children and families.
Module 3: Psychosocial and Cognitive Development: Two major theories of development focuses on cognitive development and psychosocial development. This week, we will be learning about how school-age children's cognitive development and it's link to their social skills. We will be focusing on how children develop competency and the process in which it happens.
Module 4: Moral and Social Development: This week, we will be distinguishing between Kohlberg's and Gilligan's theories on moral development and how it relates to school-age children. We will be learning key differences in how boys and girls process situations that requires moral reasoning. We will also be learning about the links between cognitive development and social development. We will be exploring two main theories that explains how social interactions play a major role in children's cognitive development. We will be looking mainly in to Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory.
Module 5: Physical Development: In module 5, we will be having the difficult conversations about children and puberty. We will be learning about having the difficult challenging conversations with children about their physical changes, hormones, and curiosity. We will be discuss healthy ways to help guide children through this experience.
Module 6: Out-of-School Program Evaluation: It is important for us to be able to apply theory when conducting observation. This week, we will be looking in to how centers meet the developmental needs of children while looking through a theoretical lens.
Module 7: Contemporary Issues School-Age Children Face: It is important for educators to be aware of the many issues children face such as being economically disadvantaged, having developmental issues, and media influences over behaviors and self-esteem. This week, we will explore the many issues children face.
Module 8: Developmental Theorists Presentation: Now that we have explored many theorists throughout the course, it is time for students to creatively present a theorists they felt most connected to as they explore the theory in relation to some of the major areas of development.
