Heraldry Discoveries and More

While at my computer one day, with fingers at the ready to tap the QWERTY keyboard and thinking about what I should write, a popup appeared[1] inviting me to enter a surname. 

So I did. What I was about to discover was the origins of two surnames based on lineage. 

Here’s what I found to satisfy my curiosity: The short answer tells me the name Katoroz was more prevalent in the area shaded red in the map at left and Bryansk Oblast was quite possibly the origin.

Another source states that this surname means “Northerners” and Chernihiv in Ukraine, Bryansk and Kursk in Russia are the main towns in which the name will be found. 

Now the long version from Heraldry:

KATOROŻ

“Great news! We have successfully mapped the geographical roots of the Katoroz family.

“Here’s what we found in our historical records,” at the same suggesting I read on:

The article continued: “Our research indicates that the Katoroz surname is rooted in the Old East Slavic language, generally meaning ‘Toponymic name derived from the Katorozh settlement or river’. The family's early history is closely tied to the landscapes of Bryansk Oblast, an area defined by its Nerussa River valley and local landmarks like the Sevsk Kremlin ruins.

“Around the year 1628, the region where your ancestors lived was shaped by major developments such as the establishment of the Sevsk Regiment to defend the southern borders of the Tsardom of Russia. Interestingly, local history notes that the region sits on the Central Russian Upland, historically serving as a strategic buffer zone between major East Slavic powers, giving us a vivid picture of the world the Katoroz family navigated.”

My curiosity was further indulged with the following:

“Our research indicates that the Zakamarko surname is rooted in the Ukrainian language, generally meaning ‘One who dwells in a secluded nook or a remote corner of a settlement’. The family's early history is closely tied to the landscapes of Lviv Oblast, an area defined by its Voroniaky Hills of the Podolian Upland and local landmarks like the Zolochiv Castle.

“Around the year 1649, the region where your ancestors lived was shaped by major developments such as the expansion of defensive fortifications in the Ruthenian Voivodeship during the Polish-Ottoman Wars. Interestingly, local history notes that the region serves as the primary European watershed between the Baltic and Black Sea drainage basins, giving us a vivid picture of the world the Zakamarko family navigated”.
