Jane, the sixth child of Robert and Mary Ann (née Woods), was baptised on 3 April 1843 at Milton, CAM. Thomas Cole, whom she married in 1865 before leaving England was born in Cheltenham, GLS. Jane and Tom sailed from Gravesend arriving in Port Chalmers, New Zeland aboard the Zealandia on 29 December 1873. They were accompanied by their children Mary Elizabeth aged 3, and Thomas (jnr) aged 14 months.
Thomas, a carpenter by trade, and then a cabinetmaker was later to become an undertaker. He operated a funeral business in joint partnership and traded as Cole and Springer of Kensington, Dunedin. Tom Cole took a keen interest in the city and, being a strong advocate for the amalgamation of Caversham with the city of Dunedin, he later became a city councillor. In 1910, after an interesting contest, he was elected Mayor of Dunedin.
Jane died on 6 April 1909 and was buried three days later at Dunedin's Southern Cemetery. Thomas died on 12 October 1915 and was buried with his wife, Jane.
