James, the first of 14 children born to Cornelius and Julia was named after his paternal grandfather. Baby James survived for a mere 12 hours and was laid to rest shortly after Christmas 1880 at Ballyvourney, Co. Cork. James' death certificate states he was "weak from birth ... no medical att[ention]" was available to save him.
