Jeremiah, otherwise known as "Jerry", son of James and Mary Lucey, was born at "Cahireen", the family farm at Bawnatanaknock, parish of Clondrohid, in west Cork, Ireland in 1855 (or 1859 if one accepts the USA records). Not being the eldest son, Jerry was not in line to inherit the family farm and emigrated to the USA just as his elder brother "Patsy" did. Jerry is reported to have been a teamster for a department store in Chicago where he met his future wife, Mary Blake who worked in housekeeping. After their marriage on 4th February 1890 in Chicago the couple moved to South Dakota where they had a homestead and Jerry broke in wild horses. After experiencing a raid on their property by native Indians Mary, understandably shaken and a little fearful, decided that she wished to return to Chicago.
During their stay in South Dakota Jerry and Mary reared a family of five children whose names were:
Patrick Joseph, a design engineer (1891-1947)
Samuel Francis, a Catholic Priest (1893-1944)
Jeremiah Ignatius, an ophthalmologist (1895-1971) who was reputed to have been flown to the Vatican to be the Pope's doctor
Mary (Ellen) Ruth, a Sister of Providence (SP) (1899- ). The 1930 Census tells us that she was aged 31, a teacher in a Parochial School, St Agnes Academy, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana USA. In 1995 when this piece of research was first being written Sr Mary Ruth was reported to be "aged 97, enjoying good health, a clear mind, and living at Providence Hall, St Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana where she taught science for many years.
William. The 1930 Census lists a William J. Lucey, aged 24 and a patient in Elgin State Hospital, Elgin City, Kane County, Illinois. Whether this is one and the same person is unknown.
By 1930, according to the Census, Jerry and his wife Mary lived in the vicinity of Lavergne Avenue, Chicago.
Of the five children, only Patrick Joseph married. He was an inventor and design engineer and was quite active in American-Irish associations including the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the American-Irish Society. Below is a snapshot of "PJ" as he was known:
1900, lived in Edmunds, South Dakota USA
1915, married at age 23 to Sylvia Zamrzia (19, b. 1896 Kansas, d. 1947 Chicago) of Austrian parentage
1917, at the time of WWI, resided at 615 Lincoln City Estate, La Porte, Indiana (see registration cards at right)
1920 Census: living in La Porte, Indiana, aged 28 and a Works Manager
1930 Census: living in Detroit City, County Wayne, Michigan as a design engineer, aged 38
1942, residing in Illinois.
Patrick was the eldest of seven children (only five surviving) and following in his father's footsteps was the only one to marry. Children of the marriage included:
(Sister) Eva M. Lucey (1917-2000)
Catherine H. (Lucey) Lawrence (1919-1987)
